Purpose, types, and nursing responsibilities for heat or cold application
|
Cold causes vasoconstriction (shrinkage of blood vessels) which decreases the amount of blood flow to an area. The therapeutic goals of cold applications include hemorrhage, reducing edema, easing inflammation and blocking pain receptors. Cold application prevents escape of heat from the body by slowing circulation.
HEAT causes vasodilation (enlargement of the blood vessels which increase blood flow to the area where heat was applied) This increases the amount of oxygen, nutrients, and white blood cells delivered to the body tissues. Heat serves the following purposes (1) relieves local pain, stiffness or aching (2) assists in wound healing (3) reduces inflammation (4) raises body temp. Danger is too hot. Dry heat and moist heat have local effects. |
