On which planets and moon do we see hydrologic processes? |
Earth, mars, and the Saturn moon Titan |
What effect do a large number of lakes have on the ocean (possibly)? |
They prevent the rise in sea level because the water is not returning to the ocean |
Tributary |
A steam or a small river that joins a larger river. The larger river can be a tributary if it joins an even larger river. |
Characteristics of a river system |
Number of tributaries decrease downstream. Tributary length increase downstream. Widths are wider and deeper downstream. |
Water velocity |
In the US commonly reported as feet/sec WITHIN a river channel. |
Discharger velocity |
The calculated volume of water of a river as it moves past a specified line per unit of time (ex: 4000 cubic feet of water/sec) |
Best place to picnic with the area of a river curve. |
Inside of the curve because The outside of the curve has the fastest water velocity. |
Meander |
Broad, looping bend in a river that can form a sinuous (winding) pattern. |
Within a meander, where within a channel would "point bars" and "cut-banks" occur? |
Cut banks- on the outside curve of a river channel meander. Point bars- crescent shape accumulation of sand and gravel deposited on the inside of a river channel meander. |
Oxbow lake |
A temporary lake Formed in the channel of an abandoned meandering river or stream. |
Continental divide |
The main divide or imaginary line of any continent that separates rivers that empty into different ocean basins |
Dendritic drainage pattern |
Tree like drainage patterns that extend upslope to the eroding edge of the drainage basin. Found on earth, mars, and the moon Titan. |
Incised channel |
River channel cut into solid rocks which form canyons |
River pothole |
Cone shaped hole or depression formed in a river bed by swirling and grinding action of individual rocks and gravel. |
Describe the direction that a waterfall like Niagara Falls will "migrate"? |
Upriver migration of a waterfall over time, as exemplified by the ever-moving location of Niagara Falls. |
River piracy |
The diversion of the waters of one stream into another steam. Ex: Pecos river |
What is a rivers sediment load? |
Rocks and soil, etc. that is carried along by the water movement. Suspended load- mud or fine particles Bed load- sand and gravel Dissolved load- dissolved minerals, acids, ions, gas, and pollutants. |
Floodplain |
The flat, occasionally flooded area that border a river or stream ( filled with alluvium) |
Bird foot delta |
The Mississippi river delta |
Avulsion |
This represents a shift in the main course of a river to a totally new and different channel that results in forming a new delta in a new location. |
