Renaissance

A time period/ movement that occurred after the middle ages. The Renaissance focused on the individual rather than on the church, there was a separation of church and state. During Renaissance, people went back to the souurces and adopted and developed ideas based on this. There was a major difference in art, different art strategies developed to make art more realistic.
Humanism
A literary movement that focused in thr individual rather than focusing on the church. Emphasized the importance and potential of the individual.Humanism became parts of different aspects of life and had a major effect on art.
Secularism
A movement during the Renaissance where people began to separate church affairs from government and different aspects of life. Instead of looking at situations with a religious view, people looked at them with a historian's perspective.
Medici Family
A wealthy family during the Renaissance that owned the Medici bank. They were very powerful in Europe, they had many different branches. The Medici's fell when the banks had bad leadership and loans so they were kicked out of Florence and their land was taken from them, finally extinguishing the Medici power.
Leonardo da Vinci
A true Renaissance man. He was a painter, sculpter, philosopher, inventor, and different things. He did many famous pieces such as "The Last Supper" and he also followed the ideas of humanism, he focused on the individual.
Raphael
Was a humaist and an atrist. Painted the school of athens which was very focused on humaist perspective.
Michelangelo
also a humaist, famous for his arcitecture. influenced by neopolitasim. did the sistine chapel and the pieta
Eurasmus
Was a Renaussance philosopher. he made fun of and confronted pope julius the second but he wrote in Latin so the public couldn't understand.
Boccaccio
a famous author and poet. was important because he wrote in the vernacular so common people could understand

a vook writin describing the perfect lady. book was controversial because it basically told women how to act annd look.

Petrarch

a renaissance humanist, he was considered the father of humanism.
Burnelleschi
was most famous for his sculptures and the buildings he designed. made the dome at the top of the dome of santa maria del fiore called the duomo.
Ferdinand and Isabella
isabella was from the castile and ferdanad was from aragon. they governed spain and centralized governments.
Hapsburg
a new dysasty thats the TUDORS gained, they controlled the inappropriate behavior of nobles through torture and won land through diplomacy.

War of Roses

A war between two rich families, important because it resulted in the Tudors ruling a new dysasty.
Pope Juilus the 2nd
known as the worrior pope. he participated in war and politics more than he did in religious affairs. he also caused a war between two armies. was the patron to Michelangelo's sistine chapel.
Nepotism
Favored family over others. Pope sixtuss did this and gave his family land to gain money.
Printing Press
A more efficient was to make copies of books and literature. allowed information to be passed easily throughout Europe because more books were available
Peace of Lodi
an agreement of an alley between milan and venice, states were already separated for war. this was important because the allies were equal so they wouldn't want to go to war with eachother
Neo-Platonism
The act of favoring your family over your people. this was important because one of the popes, Sixuss, practiced this. he favored his family over his own people and was a pope
Patron
A wealthy family that promoted and supported an artist. this was important because many famous artists of the Renaissance came from patrons and allowed artist to do what they liked.

Papal states- was controled by the pope and church
Milan-always involved in fighting
