Missouri Compromise (1820)

A compromise bill was worked out with the provision:


(1) Missouri was admitted as a slave state and Maine as a free state.


(2)

Compromise of 1850

A compromise bill was worked outn with the following provision:


(1) California is admitted as a free state


(2) South gets an upgrade version of the fugitive slave act

Kansas-Nebraska Act (1854)

Created the territories of Kansas and Nebraska, repealed the Missouri Compromise of 1820, and allowed settlers in the territories to decide if they would allow slavery by popular sovereignty.


EFFECT = led to “Bleeding Kansas,” a mini civil war between pro-slavery and anti-slavery settlers in Kansas and increased tension between the North and the South

Dred Scott Decision
1) African Americans are NOT citizens and cannot file suit infederal court.

2) Because Scott returned to Missouri, his FREE/SLAVE status was based on Missouri laws.3) Declared the Missouri Compromise Line unconstitutional based on the 5th Amendment... no person can be deprived of life, liberty, or PROPERTY – and slaves are PROPERTY.



Election of 1860

With four candidates in the field, Lincoln received only 40% of the popular vote and 180 electoral votes — enough to narrowly win the crowded election.


60% of the voters selected someone other than Lincoln.


EFFECT = The country official breaks-up as South Carolina secedes from the Union on December 20, 1860
