What was England like economically before the Black Death arrived in 1348? (5)
-The economics and population growth of most British towns seems to have stopped long before the Black Death arrived, with no new towns being formed
-International trade seemed to have been in decline in the 1300's
-There were terrible harvests in 1315-1317, causing severe famine, and lots of animals to die
-Fields were not left fallow as often... It is suggested that the population was too big for the agricultural production
-Edward III won great victories in 1346, beating the French at the battle of Crecy
What was the lives for the people in England like before the Black Death arrived? (3)
-From 1250 to 1350, there was a polarisation of the rich and poor... The rich were getting richer, and the poor getting poorer
-After 1290, taxes became much more regular to keep up with the demands of the war with the French
-The tax system was changed after 1334, and included less wealth peasants

What were the argument to suggest that society and government were falling apart after the arrival of the Black Death? (5)
-When a session of parliament ended in April 1348, they didn't meet again for two and a half years due to the BD... With a cancelled meeting in Jan 1349
-11% of all taxes were not collected in 1348-51... That is a lot of ,ones that would be vital for the economy
-The state of the cities were terrible, with smells and unsanitary conditions
-When the Scots heard of the arrival of the plague in England, they tried to take advantage and tried to invade England... A lack of moral? Surely there are more important things to be dealing with
-Crops were left to rot in the fields and animals roamed unattended
What were the arguments to suggest that society and government was not falling apart after the arrival of the Black Death? (4)
-Corpses were laid out neatly, with families usually put together, rather than just throwing them in random graves
-Still, 89% of taxes were collected, which is still a fairly high percentage given the extreme conditions
-Parliament did try to hold a session in January 1349, which showed they were trying, even though it was cancelled at the last minute
-The fact that the English fought back and swiftly drove the Scots out shows that there was still a degree of normality for the times, and that they didn't just give in
