What happened on 10th September 1419?
John the Fearless was murdered :O
How did John the Fearless get murdered, and who by? (3)
-John the Fearless and the dauphin (the Burgundian and Armagnac leaders respectively) met on numeral ground for peace talks
-With Henry in a very strong position and threatening Paris, the two (plus lots of backup) met and seemed to be considering a reconciliation
-BUT, when John knelt before the Dauphin, one of the Dauphin's men screamed "it's time!!!!" And struck Jon in the face with an axe, and the rest of his men closed in with more blows to the dying leader
What effect did the murder of John the Fearless have on Armagnac-Burgundian relations and other things?
-They went tits up, as you would expect... No chance of reconciliation now
-Dauphin was completely discredited, so French people may be more inclined to have Henry as their king
-The Burgundians might help Henry, so to bring the Dauphin to justice
What was the Treaty of Troyes, and when was it written?
-It was a treaty written by the English that laid out Henry's leadership
-Written on 21st May 1420
What did the Treaty of Troyes say? (5)
-Henry will act as acting king while Charles VI is alive
-Normandy is to remain the property of Henry absolutely
-The two crowns, English and French, will be separate in respect that they are governed separately (tough to do?) and neither will be subject to the other
-Henry and Katherine (daughter of Charles VI) were to marry on June 2nd
-Henry will do all in his power to gain power over all the people and places under the power of the Armagnacs (committed to continuing fighting)
What were Henry's next moves after the Treaty of Troyes?
-To clear Armagnac strongholds around Paris
-He entered Paris formally on 1 December 1420, riding in with Charles VI and the Duke of Burgundy
-He was well received as regent
He returned to England with his new queen in 1421, and secured more money and men for his mission to defeat the Armagnacs
-Had a kid late 1421... Henry VI!!
BUT what happened to Henry V on 31st August 1422, and what was the irony about it? (4)
-Poor ickle Henry V died, likely of dysentery :( :(
-He fell ill in July, and knew he was going to die... So made preparations for his death and successor... His baby
-And just 7 weeks after his death, Charles VI died LOL... Ironic that he had done so much to become King of France, only to die 7 weeks before he could fulfil his dream
-Now his kid was to become king
