vegetation
plant life of a place or region
mountains
high, steep, rugged land that rises above the surrounding land; at least 2,000 ft above sea level.
elevations
height above sea level
hills
areas of raised land; lower and less steep than mountains. Farmiing is easier here than in mountains; more settlers.
plains
large areas of fairly level or gently flowing land; many cities are found along (coastal) planes.
plateaus
large areas of high,flat, or gently rolling land. Elevations range from a few 100 to several 1,000 ft above sea level.
climate
a physical characteristic of a region. the avrg wthr a place has over a period of 20-30 yrs.
culture
all things that make up a people's entire way of life.
nuclear family
includes a wife, husband, and children. typical fam pattern in industrial societies.
extended family
several generations living in one household. in cultures with this type patern: respect for elders, men usually have more authority than women.
social classes
rank peopple in order of status; can be based on money, occupation, education, ancestry, or any other facter that a culture values highly.
monotheism
worship of one god
polytheism
worship of more than one god
democracy
people have supreme power
republic
form of a democracy where the people choose the leaders who represent them.
dictatorship
ruler or group holds power by force
traditional economy
people produce most of what they need to survive. Hunting and gathering, farming, and herding cattle.
market economy
buy and sell goods and services
command economy
the gov't controls what goods are produced, how they are produced and what they cost. Individuals have little economic power.
mixed economy
modern economy. Individuals make some economic decisions and the gov't makes others.
technology
the skills and tools a people use.
diffusion
the movement of customs or ideas from one place to another. can occur through trading and other pcful means, but also through war.
subculture
a group of people within a society who share certain beliefs, values, and customs.
ethnocentrism
judging other cultures by the standards of one's own culture.
racism
the belief that one racial group is naturally superior to another.
