SCABS

persons who continue to work or who do the work of workers who are on strike

LOCAL

the basic unit of every union organization which has its own elected leaders, etc.

BENEFITS

paid vacations, pensions, health and welfare provisions, life insurance, etc., the cost of which is borne in whole or in part by the employer

LOCKOUT

tactic used by an employer to get a settlement on its own terms by refusing work to employees or by closing its doors

COLLECTIVE AGREEMENT

an agreement in writing between one or more unions acting as bargaining agent, and one or more employers, covering wages, hours, working conditions, benefits etc.

STEWARD

a union activist who represents a specific group of members and the union.

CERTIFICATION

official designation of a union by the Labour Relations Board as the exclusive bargaining agent

RAND FORMULA

compulsory check-off of union dues; everyone must pay union dues even if not a member of that union

GRIEVANCE

complaint against management by one or more employees, or a union

WILDCAT STRIKE

an illegal stoppage of work since it takes place during the term of the collective agreement

PROBATION

the beginning of employment where the employee may have less rights than permanent employees; employee can also be terminated with fewer reasons

ARBITRATION

a method of settling the disagreements by bringing in a 3rd party; the decision is binding and cannot be argued by either union or management

WORK TO RULE

a slowdown in work in which workers do the minimum requirements of the job only – it is NOT a strike
