Viability + sustainability of nation state model
New eastern european state in interwar period fell into debt then dictatorship & conquest. Fell back to nation state is this model workable.
Wilsonianism & self determination, start of the nation state
Nations were recognised as international and given admission into international organisations. Led to pressure on larger political units, smaller states under them became internationally recognised.
Globalisation of the state & growth of UN
1. Collapse of Imperial powers through wilsonianism 2. end of the cold war - shift in power of UN members from western states to former colonies. Ohmae - states will whither away, won't cope with economic demands.

Modern national sentiment started in 18thC rebellion sin N.America & france. Militants/'patriots' placed reason against tradition. Nation turned politcal. Enlightenment patriotism claimed its universal. Against ancient regimes arose nationalism, land owners aspiring to form their own state. romantic nationalism - nation more cultural.
Nationalism 1860's - chauvinism proper, social darwinism. nation - ethic. Imperial discourse of superiority, mobilisation of population for conquest, integrated masses into capitalist order.
Internationalism opposed this nationalism for the 1st time. The social base changed - more parties but not stronger
Soviet rescue of the nation state
Lenin justifies seizure of power as way to break peoples identification with the state, comintern told to split with other parties & all UN bodies replicated. Stalin consolidated power, USSR more like state & bolshevik revolution turns inwards stalin orders comintern parties to co-op and integrate. Comintern arranges uprisings all over europe, this ability to organise resulted in them wing an authority for states post war. As they blended in they became redundant, stalin dissolves them.
