What is the cause of Type II Diabetes Mellitus?
- occurs when there is insulin deficiency

- insulin resistance in target tissues causes increased insulin requirements


- reduced effectiveness of insulin is due to reduced insulin receptors in target tissues and reduced efficiency of signal transduction of insulin-receptor complexes

Type II Diabetes (5) risk factors:
1. elevated blood glucose levels

2. elevated blood lipid levels


3. obesity


4. lowered HDL levels


5. hypertension

First line treatments for Diabetes:
Before any drugs, loosing weight and controlling the patients diet is the first line therapy
Normal function of pancreas
- Releases insulin and 3 other hormones ( glucagon, somatostatin, amylin)
Insulin defienciency effects on body
-hyperinsulinameia rises systemic arterial blood pressure and hyperglyceridemia (due to unfavourable LDL:HDL quotient)
