What is a Moment?
The turning effect of a force
What is the equation for calculating a Moment?
Moment (Nm) = Force (N) x perpendicular distance (m) between line of action and pivot
so Moment = Fm |
What does the force on a spanner do?
Causes a turning effect or moment on the nut
What would a larger force mean?
Exerts a larger moment
What happens if you use a longer spanner?
Exerts a larger moment as distance from pivot is greater
What do you need to do to get the maximum moment (turning effect)
Push perpendicular to the spanner (otherwise smaller moment as perpendicular distance between line of action and pivot is smaller)
Calculate the moment
Moment = 10 x 0.1 = 1 Nm
What is centre of gravity?
The point at which the weight of a body acts
What does a freely suspended object do?
Swing until it's centre of gravity is vertically below the point of suspension
Why does it eventually come to rest after swinging about pivot?
The pivot is in line with the line of action of the force
How can you find the centre of gravity of a flat shape?
1. Suspend shape and plumb line from pivot
2. draw line along plumbline 3. Suspend shape from different pivot point and draw line of plumb line 4. centre of gravity is where the lines cross |
How can you guess where centre of gravity is for simple shapes?
Looking for lines of symmetry
