'M' is a unit of...?

Concentration

'M' can also be written as...

Mol dm-3

How would you investigate osmosis?

1) Prepare sucrose solutions of different concentrations ranging from pure water to a very concentrated sucrose solution.

2) Use a cork borer to cut a potato into the same sized pieces. 1cm diameter

3) Divide the cylinders into groups of three and use a mass balance to measure the mass of each group.

4) Place one group in each solution.

5) Leave the cylinders in the solution for at least 40 minutes

6) Remove the cylinders and Pat dry gently. This removes excess water from the surface of the cylinders, so you can get a more accurate measurement of their final masses.

7) Weigh each group again and record your results.

8) The only thing you should change in the experiment, is the sucrose concentration

Percentage change (for mass)

Final mass - initial mass

_____________ × 100

Initial mass

How might you plot a graph of %change in mass against concentration of sucrose solution (M)
