assimilation
requires minority (language or culture) to blend into "American" culture. Assumes one mainstream identity. Assumes the work is to be done by the newcomer/minority group.
acculturation
requires that the minority language or cultural group adapts to the 'American' or mainstream culture (language). However, minority group can retain some defining characteristics (eg ethnic traditions) but participates in mainstream. Assumes that the work is done by newcomer/minority.
accommodation
assumes that newcomer or minority group might or might not completely adapt to US culture. Minority groups can retain identity. Majority group accomodates the minority group's language and culture, i.e. majority group does the work.
mutual accommodation
