4 Basic steps to troubleshoot a system board.
1) Observe problem symptoms.
2) Record any error messages.
3) Check the manual
4) Check CMOS
Three Types of failures on System Board.
A) Hardware failures
B) CMOS failures
C) I/O Failures
What does a 201 Error message indicate on a system board
RAM failure or RAM is installed incorrectly.
What does an "8042 Gate A20 Error" message indicate?
Problem with Keyboard or keyboard controller chip.
Source of "CMOS Checksum Error" message?
Problem with data stored on CMOS chip or possible problem with CMOS backup battery.
What does a "CMOS System Option not set" error mean?
CMOS values changed or missing. Run BIOS setup to change.
What does it mean when you get a "DMA Error" message?
System board failed the page register test which is a Read/Write test on each of the registers on the DMA controller.
Reason for Parity Check error message?
All bits are added together and result is even or odd (1 or 0). Data is then read again, if results differ from last check - error is generated.
Explain the reason why the message "Display Switch setting not proper" comes up on boot up.
System failed to verify the display type.
Switch setting that selects video mode on Motherboard was not configured properly.
5 Symptoms that indicate a possible hardware failure on the system board.
A) Failure to boot though lights are on and HDD spins up.

B) Failure to boot - no disk drive action, though lights are on and monitor provides a display

C) System freezes during normal operation.

D) System behaves inconsistently and does not maintain correct date and time.

E) Systems produces beep codes - 1,2,3,5,7, or 9 beeps or one long beeps folowed by 3 short beeps
Describe (AMI) BIOS error message: "CMOS Display Mismatch"
System is unable to confirm the type of display installed for it.
Describe (AMI) BIOS error message: "CMOS Inoperational"
CMOS shutdown register was unsuccessful
Describe (AMI) BIOS error message: "CMOS Memory size Mismatch"
BIOS setting for the total amount of memory does not match what was detected in hardware.
Describe (AMI) BIOS error message: "CMOS System Date and Time Not Set"
Date and time in BIOS not set up yet.

*Usually appears with a new motherboard - but can also appear with exisiting motherboard.
List What the "Power on Default" Option does in CMOS:
A) Replaces System CMOS settings with BIOS default settings.

B) Disables Cache

C) sets Wait states to maximum so only basic system components start up.
Suppose you select Power on Defaults from BIOS and the system still fails to start up. What is the problem?
Hardware problem rather than configuration error.

*This is the most effective way to detect a BIOS related system problem.
Two ways on SOME older boards to restore basic CMOS settings:
A) The BIOS delete key (during startup)

B) Jumpers On Motherboard.
Intermitten errors, rather than a complete failure can suggest what problem?
Power supply or Ribbon cable may be loose.
Three things to check for if you suspect a hardware related problem:
A) Faulty connections

B) Appropriate voltage levels

C) Device problems
What should you do if there are no faulty connections and Voltages are OK?
Removing and installing devices, one at a time to isolate a defective device.
Definition: FRU
Field Replaceable Units. You replace them either because they malfunction or to upgrade a system.
4 Typical FRU's:
A) CMOS battery
B) IC's (Integrated Circuits)
C) RAM modules
D) BIOS (Basic Input/Output system)
What may happen if FRU's malfunction?
The Machine may produce a continuous Beep tone or blank display and the indicator lights may be off.
Symptom: System board is dead or it moves into CMOS setup utility but doesn't start boot process.

Describe Cause and Fix:
Cause: ROM BIOS is damaged.

Fix: Replace BIOS chip that is compatible with system chipset.
Symptom: System does not maintain Date and Time properly.

Describe Cause and Fix:
Cause: old or failing CMOS backup battery.

Fix: Replace CMOS backup battery, Check holder for rust, Reconfigure CMOS settings.
Two Types of RAM memory errors:
A) Hard memory errors.

B) Soft memory errors.
Describe what a Hard memory error is:
A) RAM Module Generates a NMI (Non-maskable Interrupt)
B) Often causes system Beep errors.
To determine which Memory Module is causing a Hard memory error you should:
Remove the memory modules and reinstall them one at a time to isolate the defective one.
Describe what a Soft memroy error is and the way they are usually fixed.
Cause: Random faults in operation of system.

Fix: Reboot
