What are sulfonamides and trimethoprim?
Sulfonamides and trimethoprim inhibit bacterial growth by preventing the synthesis of folic acid, folic acid is essential for the production of DNA, RNA and proteins

What are sulfonamides and trimethoprim used to treat?
-UTI
-Chronic bronchitis

What are some possible adverse effects that may occur with sulfonamides or trimethoprim?
-Hypersensitivity including Steven-Johnson syndrome
-Blood dyscrasias (hemolytic anemia, agranulocytosis, aplastic anemia)
-Crystalluria (clients should consume 2-3 L/day to prevent crystals in the urine)
-Jaundice
-Photosensitvity
-DO NOT administer if creatinine is less than 15 mL/min
-Sulfonamides can increase the effects of warfarin (coumadin), monitor for increased bleeding, adjust dosage accordingly
