Meristems

There are 2 basic types of meristems: Primary and Secondary

Specialized zones where cell division occurs

Apical Meristem

Primary meristems

Located at ends of shoots and roots

Found in buds

Produce cells that result in elongation

Lateral meristem

Secondary meristem

Produce cells resulting in increased diameter

Presence enables tree to grow large

Palms are an exception to this pattern because they lack lateral growth
