Airborne Precautions

Airborne particles <5 microns.


For pts with tuberculosis, varicella (chicken pox), rubeola (measles), and SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome).


-Private room with negative air pressure


-Wear mask/respirator in room


-Keep pt. door closed


-Transport pt with mask


Droplet Precautions

Particles >5 microns


Pts with rubella, mumps, diphtheria, adenovirus, pertussis, Group A Strept. Pneumonia.


-Private room, if available.


-Door can be open


-Maintain 3 foot distance between infected pt.


-Use mask if <3 ft distance


-Place mask on pt during transfer

Contact Precautions

Pts that need skin to skin care.


MRSA, VISA, VRSA, VRE, CRE, herpes simplex, C. Diff., scabies, excessive wound drainage, fecal incontinence, rotavirus, Hep. A


-Private room, if available


-Clean, nonsterile gloves. Remove before leaving pts room


-Wear gown if clothing will have contact with pt; wound drainage.


-Remove PPE before leaving pts room

Neutropenic Precautions

Prevent infection with pts that are immunocompromised. Neutrophil count <3000 mm.


-Assess skin integrity q8h, auscultate breath sounds, temp. q4h; report if >101F.


-Thorough hand hygiene!


-No staff with cold/sore throat in pts room


-No fresh flowers or standing water


-No fresh salads, unpeeled fruits and veggies


-Deep breathe q4h


-Inspect IV site; meticulous IV site care
