Linear Energy Transfer (LET)
(α Particles)
- energy loss moving though tissue
- slower moving Vs faster moving particles
- High LET to tissue creates
- Levels of damage to DNA
- Lose 10-20% of Energy traveling through10 cm tissue
- Slower moving α particles have > chance to interact with matter, so energy loss per unit distance is greater
- ionization and dissociation in tissue
-0.6 or 5.0 MeV α particle damages DNA. α particles can even cause a double-strand break; Mechanisms of damage: by direct production of ions (reactive chemical species) by ejection of electrons, which may have enough energy to produce further ionization.
