United Europe
- Christian Democrates, were committed to building Europe
- Unity of the new European nation could reassert western Europe's influence in World Affairs
Organization of European Economic Cooperation (OEEC)
- Marshall plan aid led to its creation in 1948 along with the Council of Europe
- Did not work out becuase of its relationship with the U.S. Britain consistently opposed giving any real political power to the council
Common Market
- French Statesman and Planner Jean Monnet and Foreign Minister Robert Schuman called for a special organization to control and integrate all European steel and coal production
- Joined by W. Germany, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg in 1952
- Immed. Economic Goal: a single steel and coal market w/o national tariffs or quotas
- Bind six members so closely together economically that war would become unthinkable and virtually impossible
1957: Signed the Treaty of Rome, a/k/a the Common Market
- Fired imaginations and encouraged hopes of rapid progress toward political as well as economic union
The Fifth Republic
- In 1958, established by the French General de Gaulle, and ruled as president until 1969
- de Gaulle was, at heart, a romantic nationalist
- Viewed the US as the main threat to genuine French independence
- Withdrew from NATO
- Developed France's own nuclear weapons
- Vetoed the scheduled advent of majority rule w/i the Common Market
