Criminal proceedings are between the wrongdoer and the state, the person wronged is merely a witness and receives no financial compensation. In tort proceedings, the injured party sues the wrongdoer for compensation.

Eg. negligence, assault, battery, fraud, etc.

Compensation

This is the main focus of tort law. It allows liability to be attributed to an offender and requisite compensation to be assessed and awarded.
