NSTM ______, Cranes can be used for general crane applications?
NSTM 589, Cranes
What is design load?
The maximum force due to the rated load plus some or all of the following: (1)added mass effects, (2)entrained water, (3)any external payloads, (4)drag or wind loads, and (5)dynamic loads which are derived with the aid of the dynamic load factor
What is dynamic load?
The load imposed on a system due to accelerations of gravity and ship motion. It is dependent upon the magnitude and frequency of ship motions, ship attitude, and the location of the handling system on the ship.
What are the environmetal factors that should be considered in the system design?
Sea state, air temperture, water temperture, precipitation, ice, wind velocity, currents, and the corrosive affects of the salt water environment.
If the Acquisition Manager elects to impose commercial design and testing criteria administered by ABS it must be negotiated with and concurred with who?
The SCA.
For surface ships, the factor of safety for all structural and machinery components shall be ____ on material yield strength, or ____ on material ultimate tensile strength; which ever is greater?
2.5 on material strength or 4 on material ultimate tensile strength.
If galvanized rope is used, reduce the nominal breaking strength by ____% to account for the effects of galvanizing?
10%
When wet, the safety factor for nylon rope shall be applied to the breaking strength minus ____% unless a suitable marine overlay finish is used?
15%
What is the ratio of sheave or drum diameter (D) to wire rope diameter (d)?
(D):(d) Ratio 18:1
What is the ratio of sheave or drum diameter (D) to synthetic rope diameter (d) for:
-Braided:
-Twisted/Plaited:
-Aramid (kevlar):
-Braided 8:1
-Twisted/Plaited 10:1
-Aramid (kevlar) 20:1
All new designs of diver handling systems must be submitted to who for review and approval?
The Acquisition manager and SCA for review and approval
All diver Handling systems shall have static, dynamic, and rated load tests conducted on what following occasions?
-After being installed on a support ship
-Upon completion of an overhaul
-Intervals not to exceed 5 years
Who shall test procedures for all load test and system operational test (SOTs) be submitted to?
The Acquisition Manager for review and approval
How is the No load test conducted?
The diver handling system shall be operated through its full range of motions and directions. Check for unusual noise, vibration, or over heating in machinery and control components.
How is the static load test conducted?
The static load shall be equal to 200% of the operational load of the handling system, and shall be held for a minimum of 10 minutes by the brake without power to the system.
How is the dynamic load test conducted?
The load test shall be equal to 150% of the rated load of the handling system. Test loads shall be moved through 1 complete cycle of the handling system, with all limits of its operating modes (raising, lowering, traversing, traveling, rotating, etc.) included in the test.
How is the rated load test conducted?
The rated load test shall be equal to 100% of the rated load of the diver handling system. Test loads shall be moved completely through the handling system's full operating range, and within limits of all operating modes. The system shall be capable of hoisting the diving system at the system's rated speed when the hoist wire rope or synthetic line is on the outermost layer of the drum. The test load shall be run through at least 3 cycles to demonstrate proper operation. Each cycle is to be run at the specified normal operational speed of the handling system.
Hydrostatic test psi for piping and piping components shall be ______% of max operating psi. The psi used to perform the test shall be within +/- ______% of the designated test psi?
150% of max operating psi and +/- 3% of the designated test psi.
The duration of the hydrostatic test shall be not less than _____ mins, plus sufficient time for inspection of mechanical joints and components within the test boundries?
15 minutes
How often shall diver handling systems undergo certification surveys?
Normally annually
What are the 3 inspection categories that a certification survey consist of?
-Examination of all system logs or records
-Visual inspection of the handling equipment
-No load test
If a divers handling system is portable how often will a certification process be conducted?
Whenever the system is installed on the support vessel
What may cause a suspension of certification for the divers handling system?
-Violation of any of the terms or conditions of certificate
-Recognition of the existance of an unsafe condition
-Overhaul or other major repair period
What are the 4 types of load test conducted on the divers handling system?
-No load operation test
-Static test
-Overload (dynamic) test
-Rated load weight test
