Monosaccarides

Is a simple sugar that cannot be hydrolised (Broken down) glucose source of energy for cell respiration, fructose (sweet)

Dissacahrdides

a molecule consisting of 2 monosacchardie molecules linked in a condensation reaction. maltose (glucose + glucose), sucrose (glucose + fructose)

Polysaccharides

large carbohydrates formed by condensation reactions between many monosaccharides. starch, glycogen, cellulose

storing carbohydrates as polysaccahrides is useful as it is insoluble and doesn't effect osmosis, as the concentration gradient is not effected

Lipids

Contain more energy per gram than carbohydrates. Lipids are less dense than water. so fat helps large aquatic organisms to float. Non polar insoluble, no osmosis effect

Triglycerides formed by condensation reaction between 3 FA and one glycerol so 3 waters formed, linked by ester bond.

Fatty acid comp[osition

saturated - single bonds between all carbons

unsaturated - contains double bonds

mono-1

poly many
