Why is water polar

This is due to the unequal sharing of electrons between the oxygen and hydrogen the oxygen is more attracted to the nucleus so there fore it is polar, it has a overall dipole movement.

Explain the hydrogen bonding in water?

Due to the opposite charges on the hydrogen (+) and oxygen (-).



Explain the cohesive properties of water?

Water molecules tend to stick to one another, due to the hydrogen bonding, allows water to be drawn up a xylem vessel in a continuous column, cohesion is also responsible for surface tension.

Explain the adhesive properties of water?

Due to the polarity of water and it ability to form Hydrogen bonds it is adhesive. They stick to other charged or polar molecules, wall containers. Water can be held up in a narrow xylem of a plant.

What are the thermal properties of water?

1) Water has a high SHC due to the H bonds as they need a lot of energy to break, and change its temperature.


2) Water has a high heat of vaporisation due to H bonds. Allows water to act as a coolant, as it enables animals to lose heat during the vaporisation.
