Majoritarian system

An electoral system in which the winning candidate must achieve an absolute majority of votes cast in a single member constituency.

Proportional system

An electoral system using multi member constituencies in which an electoral formula is used to create proportional representation

Representation

The process by which an individual acts on behalf of a larger group

Electoral reform

Changes made to or from an electoral system

Direct democracy

Where citizens are given a direct input into decision making processes

Indirect democracy

A variety of democracy founded on the principle of elected officials representing a group of people

Referendums

A referendum is a one off vote on a specific issue of public policy, with YES/NO options

Constituency

A group of voters in a specific area who elect a representative to an organisation

Simple plurality

An electoral system in which the candidates with the most votes in a single member constituency wins

General elections

The election of representatives to a legislature from constituencies throughout the country

By- elections

The election of an MP in a single constituency to fill a vacancy arising during a governments term of office

Local elections

An election to select members of a local council

European parliamentary elections

The UK elects 73 MEPs at 5 year intervals

Devolved parliament elections

Elections to the Scottish parliament and welsh and NI assembelies held at four year intervals.

Party system

A concept of political science concerning the state of government of political parties in a democratic country

FPTP

An electoral system in which a candidate or a party is selected by achievement of a simple majority.

Winners bonus

The exaggeration of the performance of the most popular party.

Safe seat

A constituency that normally elects an MP from the same political party.

Tactical voting

Voting for a candidate most likely to defeat the voters least favourite candidate

Wasted vote

A vote for a losing candidate in a single member constituency or a vote for a winning candidate that was surpeles to victory

Adversarial policies

A situation in two party states in which the opposition is outwardly hostile and gives different policy programmes even when in broad agreement with the government

Supplementary vote

A majoritarian system used to select individuals where voters record two preferances and all but top two are eliminated before recasting

Regional list voting

Candidates are ranked in multi member constituencies, with political parties making the rankings and a proportional outcome

Alternative vote

In single member constituencies candidates are ranked and must gain outright majorities. If non do, the lowest is eliminated and 2nd choices are recast

Single transferable vote

proportional representation with ranking, as candidates must reach quota and the lowest is eliminated until one reaches that.

Additional member system

Using the d'hont rule, the francise cast regional votes (proportional representation) and constituency votes (FPTP)

Coalition government

A government formed by more than one political party, enabling government through a majority

Majority government

A government formed by a political party that has an overall majority in legislator

Minority government

A government formed by a political party that does not have an overall majority in legislator

Split tick voting

The practise of voting for candidates from different parties in an election where an elector is permitted to cast more than one vote
