What is a region?
An area in which many features are similar.

There are many diverse types of climate and landforms throughout the United States from cold, rainy areas, to hot, dry areas. There are mountains, flat lands, grasslands, deserts, and hilly regions just to name a few.
There are five regions in the United States. Name them
West
SouthWest
MidWest
Southeast
Northeast
Describe the Northeast region
The Northeast region tends to have cold winters and warm summers.

The Southwest region is hot and dry.

Describe the Coastal Plain
The Coastal Plain is flat land along the coast. It is good for farming because it is flat, has rich soil, and has mild climate.
What mountains are older and smaller than the Rockies?
The Appalachian Mountains. Erosion has worn them down.
What plains are in the middle of the United States?
The Interior Plains are in the middle of the United States.
Describe the Central Plains
The Central Plains are the eastern part of the Interior Plains. They are rolling, and have many river and streams.
Describe the Great Plains
The Great Plains are very flat, drier, and have mostly grass and very few tress. Much of this area is used for farming.

Where is the Continental Divide located?
The Continental Divide is located in the Rocky Mountains. It is the source of many rivers....some of them go east and empty into the Atlantic Ocean or the Gulf of Mexico. Some go west and empty into the Pacific Ocean.
What is a Climate?
Climate is the kind of weather a place has over a long period of time.
What affects climate?
1. Elevation (how high the land is...the higher the land, the cooler the climate).
2. how close to the equator...the closer to the equator, the warmer the climate.
3. how close is a large body of water. In the spring, the water keeps the temperature colder. In the fall, the water keeps the temperature warmer.
Why is it warmer when the land is closer to the equator?
Because it gets more of the direct rays of the sun.
The farther from the equator you are, the less direct the suns rays and the cooler it will be

There are 11 climate regions in the United States?
What climate regions is Ohio?
Ohio is Continental and Humid Subtropical.
How many vegetation regions are there?
There are four main vegetation regions.
1. forest
2. grasslands
3. desert (very dry)
4. tundra (cold, dry region where trees cannot grow.)
What causes seasons?
The relationship between the Earth and the sun causes seasons, because the direct rays of the sun shine on different parts of the Earth at different times of the year.
What affects how people move or travel?
Physical features such as climate, soil, water, and landforms can affect how people move or travel.
What is a natural resource?
A natural resource is something found in nature that people can use.
What are 4 examples of natural resources?
Soil

Minerals
What is a renewable resource?
Renewable resources can be made again by people or nature. Water, trees, wind and light are examples.
What is a nonrenewable resource?
A nonrenewable resources are resources that cannot be made again by people or are resources that would take thousands of years for nature to replace.
