isthmus
a narrow strip of land, bordered on both sides by water, connecting two larger bodies of land.
mesa
a land formation, less extensive than a plateau, having steep walls and a relatively flat top and common in arid and semiarid parts of the southwestern U.S. and Mexico
strait
Often, straits. (used with a singular verb) a narrow passage of water connecting two large bodies of water.
fiord (fjord)
A long, narrow, deep inlet of the sea between steep slopes.
archipelago
1. a large group or chain of islands: the Malay Archipelago.
2. any large body of water with many islands.
estuary
1. that part of the mouth or lower course of a river in which the river's current meets the sea's tide.
2. an arm or inlet of the sea at the lower end of a river.
fall line
an imaginary line, marked by waterfalls and rapids, where rivers descend abruptly from an upland to a lowland.
