Tissues

Groups of cells that are similar in structure & perform relates function.

Primary Tissues

Epithelial, Connective, Nervous, & Muscle

4 basic tissues

Epithelial Tissue

Sheet of cells that covers a body surface or lines a body cavity

2 forms: covering & lining, glandular

Functions: protection, absorption, filtration, excretion, secretion, & sensory reception

Epithelium Special Characteristics

1. Polarity-

2. Specialized contacts- tight junctions, desmosomes, adjacent cells

3. Supported by connective tissue- help resist stretching

4. Avascular but innervated- no blood vessels but supplied by nerve fibers

5. Regenerate- by cell division

5 characteristics

Simple Epithelia

Consists of a single cell layer

Found: absorption, secretion, & filtration

Stratified Epithelia

Composed of 2 or more cell layers stacked on each other

Found: Skin surfaces, & lining of mouth

Simple Cuboidal (Epithelium)

Consists single layers as tall as they are wide.

Function: secretion & absorption

Location: kidney tubules

Cuboidal Cells

Box like, tall as they're wide

Columnar Cells

Tall & column shaped

Squamous Cells

Flattened & scale like

Simple Columnar (Epithelium)

Single layer of tall closely packed cells aligned in rows

Function: absorbs & secretes

Location: digestive lining

Connective Tissue

Most abundant & widely distributed

Function: binding, insulate, reserve fuel, & transport substances

* There are 4 main classes

1. Connective proper- fat, fibrous tissue of ligaments

2. Cartilage-

3. Bone

4. Blood

Extracellular Matrix

Nonliving matrix which separates the living cells of the tissue

Pseudostratified Columnar (Epithelium)

All cells rest at basement of membrane.

Pseudo-- false, therefore it has a false impression of several layers.

Function: Secrets/ absorbs

Stratified Epithelia

Contains 2 or more cell layers, regenerate from below.

*Durable

Function: majorly for protection.

Stratified Squamous (Epithelium)

Most widespread, several layers, & thick. Its surface cells are squamous & deeper cells are cuboidal or columnar.
