Levothyroxine

Type: Thyroid hormone


Use: drug of choice for hypothyroidism, myxedema coma.


Adverse effects: hyperthyroidism

Liothyrone

Type: thyroid hormone


Use: hypothyroidism, myxedema coma (in conjunction to levothyroxine)


Adverse effects: cardiotoxicity

Propylthiouracil

Type: thioamide


Use: Mild thyrotoxicosis, prep for thyroidectomy. Preferred in pregnancy over other drugs.


Adverse effects: agranulocytosis

Radioactive iodine 131

Type: destroys thyroid tissue


Use: thyroidectomy


Adverse effects: hypothyroidism. Avoid in pregnancy & lactation.

Potassium iodide

Type: hyperthyroidism drug


Use: Thyroid storm, surgical prep, radioactive emergency


Adverse effects: avoid in pregnancy, anaphalactoid reaction, iodism

Propranolol

Type: beta blocker


Use: acute symptoms of hyperthyroidism, thyroid storm


Adverse effects: to be discussed

Ipodate

Use: Iodinated contrast agent

Methinazole

Class: thioamide


MoA: blocks oxidation of iodide, iodination of tyrosine, and coupling of iodotyrosines


Use: preferred for hyperthyroidism/Graves thyrotoxicosis.
