A is for Arthur. When Arthur first came to the Island, he had never been in an accident. He was very careful and very proud of his spotless record. Thomas was jealous and schemed to cause Arthur to get into his very first accident. Thomas apologized to Arthur and now the two are friends. Arthur is a handsome engine, red with the letters LMS on his side.

B is for Ben. Ben is Bill's identical twin in every respect. The twins are probably the most teasing and mischievous characters of the whole railway family. Bill and Ben have shown themselves to be very useful; after a rockslide at the Quarry, the brothers' quick thinking saved the workers and brought them to safety.

B is for Bert. Bert, along with Rex and Mike, works on the Small Railway. He is very proud of his blue coat. He arrived on the Island after his railway in England closed. He is not afraid to get back at someone if he things he has been wronged.

B is for Bertie. Bertie the Bus has a friendly grin and is ready to help any engine prepared to admit that roads have their uses as well as rails. He is the best of friends with Thomas the Tank Engine ever since their Great Race.

B is for Bertram. Bertram is a little old Engine who used to work at an abandoned mine near a castle. He earned the nickname "Old Warrior" by being brave. Toby once mistakenly thought Bertram was a ghost.

B is for Big City Engine. The Big City Engine is a quarrelsome engine from London. He travels from time to time for an overnight stay at the Big Station.

B is for Bill. Bill is Ben's identical twin in every respect. The twins are probably the most teasing and mischievous characters of the whole railway family. The initials on their boiler "SCC" stand for Sodor China Clay, which they haul around the island. Bill and Ben work at the Sodor China Clay Company as well as the harbor.

B is for BoCo. BoCo is a decent diesel with a sense of humor despite having to deal with Bill and Ben.

Bulgy

B is for Bulgy. Bulgy is a bad tempered and miserable double decker bus. He has no scruples and has been known to tell lies. He gets along very well with Diesel. Bulgy is currently in use as a hen house, but has hopes that one day someone might restore him.

B is for Bulstrode. Bulstrode is an old, bad-mannered, motorized sea going barge. He's only happy when he's chugging around with a full load, otherwise he's grumpy and rude. Percy and some Trucks, who were fed up with all his moaning, soon taught him a lesson and now Bulstrode is a "Special Attraction" on a Sodor beach.

B is for Butch. Butch is also known as the Sodor Heavy Recovery Unit. He is very powerful, and is serious about his job and loves working especially with his engine friends. Despite his immense size, he is a kind hearted giant.

B is for Byron. Byron is a friendly Bulldozer who is a member of the team called "The Pack" who works for the Sodor Construction Company. He has a booming voice and likes to work hard.

C is for Caroline. Caroline has an easygoing nature, and does not like being pushed along the road too fast. She prefers narrow country roads where she can only be driven at 20 mph.

Catherine

C is for Catherine. Catherine helps Culdee on the mountain railway, carrying passengers and supplies up the steep mountainside. Catherine actually rides coupled in front of Culdee so she can warn him of any dangers that lay ahead.

C is for City of Truro. The City of Truro is a famous GWR Engine that once visited the Island of Sodor and became Duck's friend. Gordon was very jealous of the visiting celebrity.

She prefers traveling backwards so she can see the beautiful island. Clarabel is a composite coach who carries both passengers and luggage.

C is for Cranky the Crane. Cranky works at the Brendam Docks. He has a high and mighty attitude which often annoys the engines, especially the smaller ones. Cranky knows that if he ever gets too big for his hook, the Engines have ways of getting back at him!

C is for Culdee. Culdee is a mountain railway train, equipped with a face at each end. He is very sensible and has great respect for the dangers of Culdee Fell, the mountain he climbs. His coach Catherine helps him travel safely up and down the mountains.

D is for D 199. D 199 is a Blue diesel with a bright yellow face. He believes that all important jobs should be left to diesels, and steam engines are only good for his parts. Sir Topham Hatt sent him away for causing too much trouble.

D is for Daisy. Daisy is a classy, sassy passenger diesel. When she first came to Sodor, she believed that she should only carry passengers, and never pull trucks. She learned quickly the importance of teamwork and now helps out however she can.

E is for Elizabeth, the Vintage Quarry Truck. Elizabeth is a steam tipper wagon. She's also the first lorry Sir Topham Hatt drove as a young man. Elizabeth is stubborn and proud, but she is very efficient and can move lots of material in a short period of time.

E is for Emily. Emily is a beautiful and graceful Single Sterling Engine with a brass dome. When she first came to the Island, she accidentally offended Thomas when she pulled Annie and Clarabel by mistake. However, she was quick to apologize and showed her bravery by rescuing Oliver and Toad when they were headed for a nasty accident at a crossing. She received her own beautiful new coaches from Sir Topham Hatt, and hasn't pulled Annie and Clarabel since.

F is for Fergus. Fergus is a blue traction engine who shunts trucks at the Cement Works. Reliable and down to earth, Fergus knows the rule book by heart.

G is for Godred. Godred was a conceited, careless engine who worked the Culdee Fell Mountain. It was his recklessness that caused him to derail and tumble down the mountainside. After his recovery from the bottom of the mountain, he was placed in the back of the shed and his parts were used to repair Culdee, Lord Harry, and Wilfred. Godred was named after a king, which probably explains his "high and mighty" attitude.

G is for Gordon. Gordon is the senior member of the engine family, the fastest and most powerful engine on the rails. He's extremely proud and inclined to boast. He's good-hearted, always willing to use his superior strength to help smaller engines out of trouble.

H is for Harold. Harold brings a welcome spot of dash to the quiet landscape of Sodor whenever he appears, even if the noise he makes is occasionally wearing. He is good-hearted and the engines are always pleased to see him.

H is for Harvey. Harvey is a toughie. No job is too big for him when it comes to rescue or loading. He is adventurous, daring and never knowingly lets anyone down. When he first came to the Island, the other engines thought he looked funny, but he proved to be very useful.

They love breaking up steam engines and are determined to rid the Island of Sodor of them, because as far as they are concerned, diesels do everything better! You can tell 'Arry and Bert apart by Bert's beard.

I is for Ivo Hugh. Ivo Hugh is a little red engine who was built by the workers on Skarloey's railway. He was named after Ivo Hugh, the railway's chief engineer. Everyone, especially Mr. Hugh, was surprised when the engine's name was revealed at a special naming ceremony. Ivo Hugh, pulled by Skarloey, was late getting to his own naming ceremony because of some escaped pigs.

J is for Jack. Jack is part of the team called "The Pack" who work for the Sodor Construction Company. Jack the Front Loader is the newest member of the team. He wants to be very useful, but is so anxious he tries to do the other machine's jobs. After he causes an accident by doing a job meant for Oliver the Excavator, he was worried that Miss Jenny would send him away. But he proved his bravery by rescuing Thomas when a bridge was in danger of collapsing.

J is for James. James is a medium sized engine. He likes to think of himself as a really splendid engine. This can occasionally lead to grandiose ideas about the sort of work suitable for such a noble creature, which invariably lands James in trouble. James is a mixed traffic engine, which means he can pull both passenger coaches and freight cars.

K is for Kelly the Crane. Kelly is a member of the team called "The Pack" who works for the Sodor Construction Company. He is very useful and helps Jack after he saves Thomas.

He was specially built to work at the Sodor Construction Company. When he was working at the docks, he carelessly reversed into the water and had to be sent to the repair shop.

L is for Lorry 2. Lorry 1 and his two brothers, Lorry 2 and Lorry 3, are out to prove that roads are better than rails and the most important work should be left to the roads. Lorry 2 found out that he was wrong when he had an accident on the narrow and steep road from the quarry after being too full of rocks. He was sent away for repair and hasn't been seen since.

Lorry 3 liked to tell the engines that the Lorries were there to take their work away. When we last saw Lorry 3, he had broken down after carrying too much flour from the flour mill.

M is for Mavis. Mavis is a feisty young diesel engine. She is high-spirited, often doing things without thinking about their consequences. Her lack of experience often leads her into trouble, but she's smart and learns from her mistakes. She has a lot to learn about trucks, but, with Toby's help, she is learning to be a Really Useful Engine.

M is for Max. Max the Dump Truck is a member of the team called "The Pack" who works for the Sodor Construction Company. He likes to make trouble at the construction sites and Thomas once warned Jack about him. He zooms around the site spinning out and kicking up dirt.

M is for Mike. Mike is a small but robust engine, who works on a narrow gauge line. Full of determination and sticking power, he enjoys the occasional tease but acknowledges the importance of teamwork. He loves to blow his shrill whistle, even if it annoys the other engines.

M is for Miss Jenny. Miss Jenny is the leader of the Sodor Construction Company. She works with "The Pack" to build rails and roads around the Island.

M is for Murdoch. Sir Topham Hatt brought Murdoch to the Island of Sodor to help with the heavy work on the main line. He is very big and very grand, with ten driving wheels and a large tender, his paint a dark orange. Despite his size and strength, Murdoch enjoys working in peaceful and quiet conditions. He is annoyed by the chattiness of the other engines at first, but later apologizes for his rudeness and seems to enjoy hearing Salty's stories.

N is for Ned. Ned the Steam Shovel is a member of the team called "The Pack" who works for the Sodor Construction Company. He has a big bucket and a big heart. He can sometimes be clumsy and once nearly caused Thomas to have an accident when he knocked out the keystones of a bridge. Fortunately, Jack's quick thinking and bravery saved the day.

N is for Neil. Neil is a very kind engine who works at the docks transporting goods from the ships to the island. He may look a little strange, but the engines all like him.

N is for NW Brakevan. The NW Brakevan is a spiteful nuisance who is taught a lesson when one of his schemes goes wrong and he gets caught between James and Douglas.

O is for Old Slow Coach. When she was younger, Old Slow Coach had a very grand and luxurious interior. As the years went by, Old Slow Coach was replaced by newer coaches and was sent to the Scrap Yards. Fortunately, Thomas and Percy came across her one day, and she has once again become Really Useful by serving as a home for the Firemen.

O is for Oliver. Oliver and his brake van Toad were saved from scrap by Douglas and are very grateful to him. Oliver had a new coat of paint of which he is very proud, and now works happily on Duck's branch line.

O is for Oliver the Excavator. Oliver is a kind-hearted excavator who s a member of the team called "The Pack" who works for the Sodor Construction Company. He often is assigned to do the jobs that Jack wants to do.

P is for Percy. Percy is the junior member of the principal team of engines. This little chap is normally quite happy puffing around the yard. He's always keen to oblige, a fact of which the other engines are apt to take advantage.

P is for Peter Sam. Peter Sam is a happy, kind engine. He is often teased by the others, but they love him really. He was tutored by Duke and has great respect for him, despite ribbing him about his age. Being a hard worker by nature, he seldom grumbles about late hours or extra work. (Peter Sam is also known as Stuart.)

R is for Rex. Rex is one of the three engines that work the Small Railway. He is the most level headed of the group which also includes Mike and Rex. He is a hard worker and is very kind, although he enjoys teasing Mike when he gets the chance. He was brought to the Island by Sir Topham Hatt to help bring ballast from the hills for the new branch line.

R is for Rheneas. Rheneas is a tough little engine, whose purpose in life is to work hard and uphold the fine reputation of the railway line. He became famous by bringing a train full of passengers home through terrible weather, even though he was injured himself.

R is for Rickety the Troublesome Truck. Rickety is a particularly troublesome truck who often makes mischief for the engines.

Rusty

R is for Rusty. This small, brave diesel engine's orange color easily gives her name away. She is very self-assured, and is a dedicated worker. She loves adventure as well as all the other engines, and will do anything to make their lives easier. Fearless in nature and determined, Rusty always smiles in the face of adversity. She is a pal for life.

S is for S.C. Ruffey. Pronounced "Scruffey", S.C. Ruffey is an old, experienced truck with a bad attitude and rough habits. He is the leader of the Troublesome Trucks and encourages them to cause as much trouble as possible for the engines.

S is for Salty. Salty is an old diesel engine who loves working at the docks and telling tales. When he first came to the island, he worked at the quarry, but he missed the sea terribly so Sir Topham Hatt sent him to Brendam Docks. Salty has a special way with the trucks, and Bill and Ben wish they knew his secret!

S is for Sir Handel. Sir Handel is a tough old engine who often things he knows all and often thinks he should be boss.

S is for Sir Topham Hatt. Sir Topham Hatt is the head of the Railway and it's his job to make sure the Thomas the train and the other engines are Really Useful and Right on Time. His rotund shape and his firm but kind attitude towards the engines and workers earned him the nickname "The Fat Controller".

S is for Skarloey. This bright red engine is dedicated to doing his job well and is always eager to work.

S is for Smudger. Smudger was a show off engine who rode roughly and often came off the rails. He used to work with Duke, but he caused so many accidents with his reckless behavior that the manager decided to put him out of commission. He now serves as a generator behind the engine shed.

S is for Sodor Bay Tug Boat. The Sodor Bay Tug Boat is often seen chugging through the bay and around the Island of Sodor.

S is for Spencer. Spencer is the private engine of the Duke and Duchess who once visited the Island of Sodor. He is very sleek, grand and proud. Gordon was jealous when the other engines declared him the fastest engine in the world. However, Spencer's pride caused him trouble when he doesn't take Gordon's advice to take on plenty of water before tackling the hills on the Island. He ran out of water on Gordon's hill, and Gordon had to come to the rescue to pull Spencer to the special party. Spencer was embarrassed when Sir Topham Hatt declared Gordon the fastest engine on the Island.

S is for Stepney. Bursting with enthusiasm and always eager to please, Stepney is every engine's friend. He was saved from the scrap yards by Rusty, and now helps out wherever Sir Topham Hatt needs him. When he first arrived at the railway, he was a "special" on Thomas' branch line, which led to a delay for Thomas. Thomas was upset, but quickly learned to work together with Stepney.

T is for Terence. Good old honest Terence is the subject of endless teasing from the younger engines on the subject of his crawling tracks. Slow and steady and always with a smile, that's Terence. He once pulled Thomas out of a snow drift, proving that his caterpillar treads can be Really Useful.

B is for Boulder. Boulder lived high in the mountains of Sodor. When Thumper shook the mountain during construction of a new quarry, Boulder fell onto the tracks. He chased Rusty, Skarloey, Rheneas and Percy down the mountain. For safety, Sir Topham Hatt moved him to a new location. Rusty thinks that Boulder sometimes looks up and sighs at the mountain where he once lived.

D is for D 261. Considered by the other engines to be a little snooty, The Diesel (also know as D261) has a "know-it-all" attitude that can really annoy the steam engines on the Island.

T is for Thomas. Thomas the Train is a cheeky, fussy little engine, often getting into scrapes, usually by being over-eager to do things best left to bigger and more sensible engines. He has his own branch line where he pulls his coaches Annie and Clarabel.

T is for Thumper. Although he was built by the Sodor Mining Company to speed up operations, Thumper often goes out of control, causing minor disruptions when he works with Rusty. His manner is cool, and no job is too big for him.

Tiger Moth

T is for Tiger Moth. Low-flying and sometimes reckless, Tiger Moth the bi-plane is a bit of a nuisance to the otherwise peaceful skies on the Island.

T is for Toad. Toad is Oliver's Brakevan. They were both saved from scrap by Douglas and are very grateful to him. Toad has no time for the insults of Troublesome Trucks and works happily alongside Oliver on Duck's branch line. Toad is always coupled to Oliver so he is facing backwards. This is fine with since some Troublesome Trucks played a trick on him and he learned that traveling backwards can be very useful.

T is for Toby. Toby is an old-fashioned Tram engine who was brought to the Island to help out after his own line closed. He and his faithful coach Henrietta are always happy to work, having once nearly been scrapped.

T is for Trevor. Trevor is an old tractor who loves to show that he can still be Very Useful. His favorite pastime is giving rides to the children who come to the farm to visit him.

T is for Troublesome Trucks. The freight cars of the railway who take great delight in causing trouble for whichever engine has to pull them. Noisy and silly, they talk a lot and do not attend to what they are doing.

W is for Wilbert. Wilbert the Forest Engine is a smart blue saddle-tank engine. His line in the Forest was short, so he was delighted to help out Donald and Douglas on their branch lines.

W is for Wilfred. Wilfred is a kind old mountain engine. A hard worker, he is very cautious and gets upset at the carelessness of the other engines. He loves to whistle as he goes up and down the steep hills.

D is for Dennis. Dennis is a lazy diesel who will do anything to get out of work. To disguise this, he takes advantage of any opportunity to create an excuse and avoid a decent day's work. Dennis is different in color and styling from any other engine on Sodor. His distinct facial expression gives this character a unique personality.

M is for Molly. Molly is a large, powerful and bright yellow engine. She's proud of her strength, and is also sensitive. She's very aware of what the other engines think of her and wants them to think the best.

V is for the Vicar of Wellsworth. The Vicar Of Wellsworth's real name is Reverend Charles Laxley. He lives in the vicarage orchard. The orchard every summer holds a Village Fete. The Fete is the best thing the Vicar likes to put on for all the Children and other sodor Visitors. Trevor the Traction Engine is now owned by the vicar and loves his new home in the orhard close to Edwards Branchline. The Fetes that get put on are always to help raise money for the Children who would love to visit the seaside, and each year it's a great sucess; even Kind Edward thinks so after he helped out with the posters made by the vicar.

A is for Airport Manager. The Airport Manager keeps things running at the Sodor Airport. He makes sure that all visitors to the island arrive and depart safely and makes sure that all airplanes are carefully checked before leaving.

Mr. Percival
M m
M is for Mr. Percival. Mr Percival is the Thin Controller of the Skarloey Railway. He is called the Thin Controller because he is thin and he wears clothes like the Fat Controller. Mr Percival brought in the new engine Mighty Mac to work with the other engines on the Skarloey Railway. He was happy but was later annoyed when work wasn't going too well with them.

Famous Artist

F is for the Famous Artist. The Famous Artist came to The Island to paint "The Spirit Of Sodor." Percy took him all over the island and later it was revealed the the Artist's finished work happened to be about Percy taking him around the island. Percy was surprised and the Artist was very pleased with it.

Mr. Hastings

M is for Mr. Hastings. Duncan had been careless with his whistle, trying to make it very loud, and as a result of this, he lost it. So Mr. Hastings had the wonderful idea of making a whistle for him using the organ, which he tooted at each and every stop along the journey. At first Duncan thought it was daft, but soon enjoyed it when they arrived back at the yards to hear the engines whistle along with the organ.

Fisherman
F f
F is for Fisherman. Whenever Thomas and Arthur have to collect fish from the village, the fisherman can always be seen unloading the fish from the boats and putting them into crates of ice to keep them fresh and cool. Thomas once had an accident with fish and was huffy towards the fisherman. They couldn't blame him really, but he hasn't liked fish since his accident with them many years ago.

Fireman

F is for Fireman. The Fire Crews on Sodor are very important. They go out on special traning days and go through a lot of hard work to become Fire Fighters. The fireman had a difficult job of putting out the blaze in the workman's hut near the seaside. Their fire engine ran out of water and they could not use sea water because it clogs their works; but thanks to Thomas and Percy, they used the water in their tanks to help fight the fire. The engines plan worked and the fire was soon out. The fire fighters were pleased with the engines as were their drivers and firemans'. The firefighters had also tackled a fire earlier on the same day. The fire they had tackled before was James' oil trucks train that had caught fire after sparks from his funnel set it alight.

Circus Performers

C is for Circus Performers. The Circus comes to Sodor! The performers do all sorts of crazy stunts in the circus shows. Tthey do all sorts of other things too, like throwing pies at one another and splashing each other with hoses, riding around on horses and placing their heads inside lions' mouths. But it's worth it for all the Family and Visitors when they go to watch them do it.

Brass Band
B b
B is for Brass Band. The Brass Band comes every year to play on Special Occasions and at Summer Fetes, sometimes ones that are put on by the Vicar of Wellsworth. One time, Thomas had to take the Brass Band but accidentally left the Tuba player behind, and spent all day searching for him. Another time before that, Edward was to take the Brass Band but was knocked off the rails by a Large Crane offloading a ships boiler.

Gentlemen of the Railway Board
G g
G is for Gentlemen of the Railway Board. These Gentleman Are the Railway Board. They come to Sodor to see new arrivals give demonstrations of what they can do, and see if they can be suitable enough to join the Fat Controllers Railway. The Railway Board wanted to see new arrival Harvey the Crane Engine give a demonstration of what he could do, but they didn't bank on his Demonstration to be rescuing one of the Fat Controller's engines. But it was good enough to satisfy them, and they decided after watching him rescue Percy and the trucks that he was exactly what Sodor needed.

Veterinarian

V is for Veterinarian. The Vet came to help Farmer McColl with his sheep when they were lambing. It had been snowing heavily and large snowdrifts had built up during the day and night. Duck had tried to help them out by using his snowplough, but it no good. He couldn't beat the snow drifts. So Toby suggested his old Branchline, and took the Vet to the farm along that route, but it was rough going. In the end, the Vet checked them over and was pleased with Toby for his best effort. He suggested the lambs stay in Henrietta and the Vet thanked Toby for helping him get safely to the farm in good time.

Railway Inspector

R is for Railway Inspector. The Railway Inspector is the most important man on the Island of Sodor. He comes to check that everything is in good working order and that all the engines are Spic & Span each time he visits. He also checks signals, sheds, track and other areas of Sodor to see how well the Railway is being loked after and run. The results are always 100% for the Fat Controller. One time there was a problem when James, Emily & Gordon got covered in coal dust thanks to careless James, and with thanks to Gordon, he shot a blast of dust from his funnel over the Fat Controller & the Railway Inspector.

Miller
M m
M is for Miller. The Miller works at his own Windmill located on Toby's Branchline. He works all day everyday producing flour for the markets and shops. It's hard work, but he enjoys his work so much that whenever Toby comes to collect the flour trucks, he is always happy to see him. His Windmill suffered a lot of damage one time when a storm struck, but thanks to Toby's marvellous idea, it was soon re-built with new wood and a new paintjob, and looks as good as new.

Lord Callan

L is for Lord Callan. Lord Callan owns the old Castle By the Loch. It runs alongside the old Castle Causeway towards the other side of Sodor. Lord Callan had come back to re-open the Castle for a Celebreation of re-opening it. Donald & Douglas, the Scottish Twins, were sent to deliver the loads for the Grand Re-Opening to Lord Callan. They made good timing but got caught up in a landslide which toppled the breakvan over on it's side, trapping the twins near the scary loch. In the night they saw a strange shape coming across the water. They were scared, but it was only Harvey with the Breakdown Train. They soon were on their way again the next day and Lord Callan was so pleased with them. "Aye, a Splendid Pair of Engines," he said to the Fat Controller.

Farmer McColl

F is for Farmer McColl. Farmer McColl lives close to the Railway in the countryside. He takes dairy products from his farm by road or rail to the markets and stalls all over the Island. Sometimes he uses the engines to help deliver things like eggs, milk and meat to the docks if they are going to be shipped over to the mainland. He once had his barn roof ripped off by a fierce storm and it was up to him to get help. Luckily Emily arrived safely with the new timber for the barn roof so the calves could be kept nice and warm. He gave his great thanks to Emily and again had to use Thomas to deliver the eggs around the Island. Thomas went too fast and smashed some of the eggs. Luckily only a few were damaged, and the rest arrived safely around the Island.

Cyril the Fogman

C is for Cyril the Fogman. Cyril is the Railway's Fogman. When the weather in Misty Valley gets really bad and the engines can't see, he put's detonators on the tracks to warn engines when there is fog ahead and when there is danger lurking in the mists. Cyril is a kind, gentle Fogman and was once replaced by a fog horn, which caused a landslide and caused Thomas to crash into the piles of rocks and earth. But luckily Cyril heard Thomas crash, and he was quick to warn Toby about the wrecked train. Soon things were back to normal with Cyril as the main Fogman again.

Tom Tipper

T is for Tom Tipper. Tom Tipper is a friendly and very cheerful postman. He works day and night collecting mail and delivering it to all the different locations on Sodor where Thomas & Percy's Rails cannot reach. He drives a smart red postvan and feels very pleased to get around to the different locations meeting old and new faces each day of the year. Tom once lost his old van and had a bike, but his bike was Tracked by Percy accidentally. The next day he was back, more cheerful than ever with a smart new postvan sitting on the roadside, and it was all thanks to Percy's accident with the bicycle.

Alicia Botti

A is for Alicia Botti. Alicia Botti is a very Famous Singer. She travelled from the mainlands to perform with the Opera on Sodor, and then she also came back again for the the opening of a new station on Sodor. She has a very loud singing voice. One time a mouse scared Alicia Botti so badly that she screamed loudly and broke all the windows all over the town. As she sang that night at the castle, her voice echoed all over the Island.

Tiger Moth's Pilot

T is for Tiger Moth's Pilot. This is the Pilot of Tigermoth (Bi-Plane). He was flying Tigermoth dangerously low and almost ended up hitting the Fat Contoller and his Family, but luckily he missed and continued flying like a maniac around the island. One day he lost control and crashed his plane into a haystack in a farmer's field. The Fat Controller spoke to the pilot and requested that he be grounded till he learned to not show off in the air with busy air traffic about.

Stationmaster

S is for Stationmaster. Stationmasters are the rulers of the stations on Sodor and the Mainlands. It's their job to see that all trains leave and arrive ontime and safely and that there is no confusion. If there is, he will tell you about it in his large office. The Fat Controller has hired a lot of Station Staff for all the stations on Sodor. There are never any delays at the bigger stations like Knapford. All trains leave and go ontime, and all the passengers love to thank the Stationmaster and engines for their greatly on-time running services.

S is for Signalman. The Signalman plays a very important roll on the Island of Sodor. He has to check all the signals and make sure that all the tracks are set for all the right lines, becuase if there's ever an accident, it would be blamed on the signalman for not watching what he was doing. The Points by Signals are operated by levers inside the Signalboxes. These points are set to the right lines for the right trains. All mainlines must be kept clear for fast Express trains like Gordon's.

Refreshment Lady

R is for the Refreshment Lady. The Refreshment Lady sells refreshments at her Tea Shops and in her new Travelling Tea shop on rails. She enjoys serving all kinds of wonderful refreshments to the passengers and other visitors to the Island Of Sodor. One time she was selling refreshments at her shop by the quayside when Peter Sam accidentally left her behind at the station as she was making her way to the train. She caught the train and then told Peter Sam at the big station that Henry would never have left the train because he is a Guaranteed Connection.

N is for the New Police Officer. The New Police Officer is not a friendly officer like the retired one. He is very mean and rude. He didn't like Thomas because he said that Thomas was breaking the rules by not wearing a Cow Catcher or side plates. He scolded Thomas and wrote down all the stuff Thomas had done wrong in his notebook. The Fat Controller also tried speaking to the Policeman, but it was no good. "The Law is the Law, and it can't be changed," is what the policeman replied to Sir Topham Hatt.

Manager

M is for the Manager of the Mid-Sodor Railway. This is the Manager of the Mid-Sodor Railway. He used to run the railway but sadly had to leave his job behind when the Mid-Sodor Railway closed forever. His whereabouts on Sodor are now unknown, but he had enjoyed all his life running the railway. He had to sell Falcon and Stuart and they went to live on the Skarloey Railway, but Duke had to be left in the old Engine sheds next to the hillside. Duke and Mid-Sodor Manager, we miss you very much now.

Important Visitor

I is for the Important Visitor. This Gentleman came to Sodor by request of Sir Topham Hatt to help find a new location to build the Children's New Play Park. The old one had closed because the sand pits were full of dirty, soily sand that was unhealthy for the children to play in. Thomas wanted to help and was trying to tell the engines about it, but the engines thought that this visitor had come to Sodor to see if the engines could be replaced by Harold, which in fact was a rumor that had come across all wrong.

Guard

G is for the Guard. The Guard plays the most important job on the whole railway. He rides along in the Breakvans & Break Coaches on Special Express Trains, Slow Goods and Heavy Moving Mixed Traffic Journeys. He makes sure that all the trucks are fastened securely before any journey begins and if there is ever a problem on the trains, he will use his Breakvan to bring the train slowly to a hault while the problems are sorted out by himself, the Driver and the Fireman of the train hauling the loads.

F is for Foreman. The Foreman has a very important job in the yards, docks and quarries on Sodor, keeping all the work going and making sure all work is done ontime. The engines sometimes like to make trouble for the foreman, but he has his way of dealing with the troublemakers, and the most times you will see him, he will be at the quarries telling Bill, Ben and Mavis that their work is very important and needs to be done ontime.

Tow Truck Driver

T is for the Tow Truck Driver. The Tow Truck Driver assists with helping out with the heavy work like rescuing broken down vehicles with Butch the Breakdown Truck. One of the jobs he had to help with was bringing in Lorry 3 after he was overloaded with flour and his back axles broke off on the level Crossing in front of Donald. The job was hard but successful, and after that the job seemed easier. He is kind hearted and doesn't like being fooled about with; He takes his work seriously.

Butler

B is for the Butler. The Butler serves Sir Topham Hatt well at his house. He works hard and is treated well, with great respect. The Butler is rarely seen, but Topham knows that he can always rely on his butler to do a good job of things. Sometimes the butler takes a few days off work, but he is always happy to return to assist Sir Topham Hatt and Lady Hatt whenever they have something on their minds.

B is for the Barber. The Barber works close to the railway in his little barbershop located in the sidings beyond Wellswroth Station. He is not known to be seen wandering around the island. The Barber had a fright once when Duck crashed into his shop wall and scared all the customers. The Barber was furious, and spread shaving foam all over Duck's face. The Fat Controller was not amused by it, and the Barber soon washed Duck's face off and apologized, because he did not know that Duck was being a brave engine.

O is for Old Bailey. Old Bailey is a Fogman who lives at the station by the Lake on the far side of Sodor. He likes the Old Station and often plays ghostly tricks on engines in the mist, making them think there is a ghost haunting the place. But Henry knows Old Bailey likes to play around. Old Bailey was quick to warn Henry about the viadauct when Henry was taking a train to the lakeside station one misty evening. As a reward for his bravery, Old Bailey was given back his job as Stationmaster of the lakeside station and feels very happy now.

Nancy

N is for Nancy. Nancy is a guard's daughter who spends most of her time cleaning and polishing the engines on the Skarloey Railway. She enjoys it, but thinks that they make themselves dirty on purpose just so that they can be cleaned by her for a few hours. She often helps the Refreshment Lady pack the ices for the passengers; but she loves being around the engines, even if they don't enjoy her company.

Mrs. Kyndley's Daughter

M is for Mrs. Kyndley's Daughter. Mrs Kyndley's Daughter had a very important day at hand on Sodor. She was getting married and everything was going fine, but Mrs. Kyndley had forgotten about the good luck package for the bride. Percy, who was on the scene at the time, wondered what it was for, and when she explained, they soon started looking around for all the special things that were to go in the package. After the wedding, the Fat Controller anounced the package, and the Bride kissed Percy till he went bright red. It was the best package she ever had been given.

Mrs. Kyndley

M is for Mrs. Kyndley. Mrs. Kyndley is a very sweet woman and a great friend of the Fat Controller's Engines. She lives close to the Branchline and often sees Thomas and the other Engins passing gently by with their heavy trains. She once was snowed in her cottage, and couldn't find any way to contact the engines for help. Luckily Thomas, Toby and Percy came to her rescue along with Terrence the Tractor. She was invited to a Christmas party at the Engines' sheds and thought it was the most memorable Christmas she had ever had.

Jem Cole

J is for Jem Cole. Jem Cole is an Engine Restoratore. He helped the Vicar save Trevor from the clutches of the scrap dealers and went on to making him as good as new. The Vicar then bought Trevor, who now lives at the Orchard close to Edward's Branchline. Jem Cole is also Trevor's Driver and still chuffers around on him when there is heavy work to be done. Jem Cole says he never drove a better engine than Trevor the Traction Engine.

J is for Jeremiah Jobling. Jeremiah Jobling was a passenger on James' train. James had unfortunately made a hole in the coaches brake pipe bringing the train to a complete stand still. Among the passengers stood a Gentleman with some leather bootlaces. This was Jeremiah Jobling, a passenger who looked very important. When he refused to hand over his bootlaces, the passengers got cross with the railway and then Jeremiah. At last he handed over the laces and then the train continued.

Mrs. Topham Hatt

M is for Mrs. Topham Hatt. Mrs. Hatt is Topham's mother. She came to visit him when she got invited by Topham to come and meet all the engines. She is very kind and loves the railway, and she has a dog called 'Gremlin' who was renamed after they had an unexpected encouter with the Gremlins the day she came to visit. But apart from being shaken up by Gordon while she was trying to have a bath, she enjoyed visiting her son and hoped that she would see him again very soon.

Q is for the Queen of Sodor. The Queen of Sodor is a leaky, dirty looking old barge that was to be taken to the workshops to be broken up. The Fat Controller came to see which engine would take her. James, thinking it was very important work decided that he would go and show everybody just how important he is.
But James had an accident with the barge, when it crashed through a pipe that spilled out a very large amount of sewage over the barge and the rails. Luckily, in the end, the barge arrived at the workshops right on time.

J is for the Jet Engine. After a careless incident with Cranky's hook, the Jet Engine started to rocket Thomas up the line. He raced past almost every engine including Gordon. This machine goes forward by pushing hot air out of its rear end, and is started by a manual switch located on the top of the engine.

Unlucky 13 (The Ugly Engine)

U is for Unlucky 13, the Ugly Engine. No. 13 engine caused grief with Donald and Douglas when he came to work on the island. He said he was the unluckiest engine in the world. He was hit by a land-slide and his fire-box got knocked out of place.
He soon had a new fire-box, and said to the twins, "I shall never forget Sodor because this is the place where my bad luck turned good."
