Federalism
Federalism was the doctrine of the Federalists in the US. Federalism aimed to centralise power to the federal government. Led by Alexander Hamilton, the Federalist connoisseur, the Federalist party aimed to do promote industrialism, keep the US in debt as it "unified" the country, set up a national bank and didn't want to spread west.
The First American Party System
The first party system was the conflict between Jeffersonian democratic-republicans and Hamiltonian federalists who battled for presidency of the nation.
Hamilton's Economic Plan
1. Hamilton wanted to pay off all Confederation debts to legitimise the new government. 2. Hamilton proposed for a national bank that would stabilise the nation's economy through a paper currency. 3. Make America more self-sufficient rather than heavily depend on agricultural exports. 4. Hamilton wanted to adopt a Mercantilist economy, protecting American merchants and workers through subsidies and tariffs.
Neutrality & Foreign Policy
The Neutrality Proclamation was made by George Washington stating that the US would be neutral in the war between France & England. The Foreign Policy was that America was to become solitary in the sense that they wouldn't involve themselves with foreign european affairs.
Jeffersonian Democracy
Keep intact the state government as of higher power and limit authority to the federal government. Wanted to focus on the lower and middle class as much as the upper class, rather than the Federalist striving for keeping the upper class happy. Jefferson, after winning the election of 1800, sought to give power to the common man. He sought to to rid the nation of debt as well.
Supreme Court Cases
Under John Marshall, the Supreme Court self-implemented itself as an important part of the government. Many Supreme Court cases, like the case of Gibbons vs. Ogden helped clarify the Constitution and federal vs. state government power.
Territorial Expansion
Jefferson didn't want to cause problems with the French, Indians, Spanish and the British and opposed the idea of spreading west. However, Hamilton wanted to spread west. But, Jefferson (against his own policies) went forth with the Louisiana Purchase from France. This would help with Democratic-Republican success in government and was a significant move in the spread of US territory.
Freedom of the Seas
The seas were terrorised by the Barbary Pirates, a North African group that would rob European and US ships unless they paid a yearly fee. The Freedom of the Seas was pushed by Jefferson to fight against these pirates to have free trade between nations.
War of 1812
War of 1812 between British colonies in Canada (with Indians) against the US. The US were ****** with Britain as they held two restricting laws against them, the restrictions of American trade with France and the recruitment of American seamen into the Royal Navy. This induced a war between America and Britain that resulted in the end of the two policies, but all over was a British win.
