benefits of using herbal medicines in the treatment of children's illnesses are manifold
• We can use herbs to alleviate the discomforting symptoms of disease.
• Herbs can support and improve the child's immune system so that illness is less likely to
recur, and, if it does, the child will probably recover more quickly and thoroughly.
• Herbs can be nutritive, especially useful for poor eaters.
• They can facilitate convalescence after an illness.
Most Common Ailments seen in Children
Ear, Nose & Throat, Respiratory Infections
Colic
Colic is abdominal cramping caused by wind or constipation.
Sign - Babies draw their legs up
Causes:
Feeding technique - too much air
Emotional Tension
Reaction to foods mother is consuming

The physiological mechanism behind colic is thought to be excessive fermentation and gas production in the intestines, and can be related to foods eaten by the nursing mother

Gentle and safe for children: a mild sedative action useful in treating insomnia, for convulsions, nervous tension, anxiety, nervous excitability or tension, for angry irritable children, great for colic too, great herb for digestive system, bitter stimulant, maintaining adequate digestion, bile flow and pancreatic action, etc
Sleep formula for Babies & Kids

Fever - Pathology
Fever is part of the immune
system's normal reaction to acute infection and thus is a common symptom in all the childhood infections.

Fever:
• May last for 3-4 days intermittently
• Fever greater than 38C
• Kills bacteria and viruses
• Increases white blood cell numbers
• Increases white blood cell activity and migration.

Actions (2) & Herbs
Baths, wet cloths
Cooling Diaphoretics - Tilia, Matricaria, Melissa, Sambucus
Immune Boosts - Echineacea, Hydratis
MEASLES
A highly contagious acute viral disease

Measles, or rubeola, is a viral infection that can be spread by physical contact or through the air via respiratory droplets. One bout usually confers immunity for life, but a few children get measles twice.
Measles Signs & Symptoms (6)
Fever
Red eyes with light sensitivity
Runny nose
Dry and sometimes severe cough
White spots (Koplik's spots) on the inside of the cheeks. These are seen two days before the red rash appears, which first develops near the scalp and later spreads to the upper body.
Symptoms may be severe, and children with measles are pretty sick and miserable. The rash lasts about seven days, but the child usually begins to feel better by the fourth day.
After three to four days, the rash takes on a brownish, bronzy appearance, and peeling may occur
Measles Actions (5) & Herbs
Diaphoretics help ease fever; diaphoretic teas such as Nepeta cataria, Achillea millefilium,Sambucus nigra, Melissa officinalis and Tilia spp are especially appropriate. Boneset can be useful too.

Antipruritics will help relieve itching. Stellaria media is particularly effective.

Demulcent expectorants help with both the cough and the sore throat. Herbs to consider include Tussilago farfara, Verbascum thapsus, and Glycyrrhiza glabra. If a stronger remedy is indicated, use Marrubium vulgare.

Immune modulators like Echinacea spp.

Antipyretic- Matricaria recutita, great nervine for restlessness.

Eyebright tea can be used topically if there is pronounced photosensitivity.
Mumps
An acute contagious, generalised viral disease, usually causing painful enlargement of the salivary glands, most commonly the parotids. (The Merck Manual)

Incubation 14 to 24 days
Mumps - complication
Meningitis is a marked complication. Watch out for stiff neck or severe headache! Rash that doesn't disappear under glass.
Mumps Signs & Symptoms (5)
Fever
Swelling of the parotid glands
Achiness and restlessness
The swelling of the parotids can be very alarming and change the patient's appearance quite dramatically.
The jaw may become stiff because of glandular swelling. The testicles are involved in up to one fifth of males, especially older patients.
Mumps Herbal Actions (7) & Herbs
Lymphatics are crucial to help drain the affected glands. -Galium, Viola, Echinacea
Hepatics or gentle laxatives will help if there is associated constipation. - Arctium Lappa, Tarax rad, Glycyrrhiza glabra, Althea off.
Anti-inflammatories and demulcents may be helpful in alle
viating pain and discomfort in the throat. - Verbasum,
Immune modulators - Echincea, Hydrastis, Sambucus
Diaphoretics - Achillea, Sambucus, Matricaria
Antimicrobials are the key to successfully clearing the infection.- Echinacea
Alteratives - Galium, Echinacea,
Chicken Pox
Chickenpox is a mild but highly infectious disease caused by a the varicella-zoster virus.
Most common in children who are between two and eight years of age, although you can develop chickenpox at any age.
The 'incubation period' is 10-21 days ( the symptoms apper after coming into contact with the virus).
It is spread via droplets of saliva and nasal mucus in sneezes and coughs.
Chicken Pox Signs & Symptoms (7)
Fever (37.7°–38.8° Celsius, though in rare cases may be higher)
Headache
Feeling of weakness, malaise, apathy
Red, itchy rash on the skin that usually appears first on the abdomen or back and face, and then spreads to almost everywhere else on the body, including the scalp, mouth, nose, ears, and genitals.
The rash begins as multiple small, red bumps that look like pimples or insect bites. They develop into thin-walled blisters filled with clear fluid, which becomes cloudy. The blister wall breaks, leaving open sores, which finally crust over to become dry, brown scabs.
Some kids have a fever, abdominal pain, sore throat, headache, or a vague sick feeling a day or 2 before the rash appears. These symptoms may last for a few days.
Chickenpox is contagious from about 2 days before the rash appears and lasts until all the blisters are crusted over.

The face is most commonly affected, but other exposed areas can be involved as well. Typically, impetigo is restricted to children and is highly contagious.
The characteristic appearance is one of multiple tiny pus¬filled blisters that break readily, leading to a larger, more widespread eruption forming the characteristic honey¬ coloured crusts.
Itching is common, and scratching may spread the infection.
