ABSORPTION - Normal aging changes will impact the reduction of mucosal surface area in the digestive tract, reduction in blood flow, and changes in secretions, all these changes will affect the absorption capabilities of the digestive system.
DISTRIBUTION - with aging, the balance between body water and lean body mass decreases while body fat increases. These changes favor the distribution of fat soluble constituents over water soluble.
ELIMINATION - liver metabolism, liver function and elimination at other areas in the body are less efficient with age.

Red Flags (ophthalmology):
• A sudden loss of sight in a non-red eye, big floaters, “flashers” - can be retinal detachment
• Watch for any impaired or blurred vision in diabetic person - diabetic retinopathy
• Watering and photophobia with no red eye - serious, could be retinal damage
• Headaches, visual disturbances and pain in the eye - could be glaucoma, shingles, temporal arteritis
• Blurred vision, loss of peripheral vision - can be glaucoma or MS
• Watch out for any unexplained or severe visual disturbance, painful eyes
CATARACT what is and S&S
gradual loss of sight following chemical disturbance in the lens protein resulting degeneration and opacity of the lens.
Signs and Symptoms
• Very slow onset (usually associated with aging)
• No pain
• Slow decrease in vision
• Diabetes - diabetic retinopathy and cataracts. High levels of sugar in blood make lens less transparent
