Synopsis (English)
book which prints similar pericopes from the Gospels (either the Synoptics only, or possible all four Gospels) in parallel columns for easy comparison; it is based on a single English translation, e.g., the RSV or the NRSV. For the most part, pericopes are arranged from beginning of Matthew to end of John; because of the uniqueness of John, however, many pericopes have to be printed out of their biblical order. (Calef: "Whoever invented this for us deserves the Nobel Prize in . . . . !!!!")
Synopsis (Greek)
same as above but in Greek; it is based on a single critical edition of the Greek New Testament
Concordance
a book listing all the passages in the Bible (OT & NT) in which a particular word is used (a handy way to find a passage you're looking for; just think of a significant word that you are sure is in the passage, and this tool will help you find the passage in the Bible!)
Inter-Linear New Testament/Bible
an edition in which each line of the original biblical text (OT Hebrew or NT Greek) is followed by a line containing a literal English equivalent directly below each Greek or Hebrew word. (Because the word order of ancient languages is very different from the word order we are accustomed to in our modern English, the English equivalent is out-of-order and seems very strange and choppy. That's why Inter-Linears usually print a smoother English translation in the margins.)
Parallel Bible
an edition which prints several English versions - NAB, NRSV, NIV, etc. (often 4, 6, even 8 different versions, sometimes including the original Hebrew or Greek text) - in parallel columns on the same page for easy comparison; texts follow the biblical order from Genesis to Revelation; a Parallel NT starts with Matthew and ends with Revelation
Bible Dictionary
contains articles on biblical names, places, themes, images, institutions, and other words, in alphabetical order
New Testament Abstracts
a quarterly periodical that provides abstracts on recently published articles in periodicals and journals of New Testament scholarship and on recently published books in New Testament studies; this handy resource allows a scholar or student to find "everything" that has been published on a particular NT pericope and to read a summary (abstract) of any article before deciding to read it in its entirety.
Bible Atlas
a book containing maps and diagrams, and sometimes also photos and discussions of biblical geography and topography.
Bible Commentary
a book containing modern scholars' explanations of (i.e., commentary on) biblical texts, arranged in biblical order (i.e., book-by-book, chapter-by-chapter, verse-by-verse); usually includes notes on items - historical, cultural, geographical, linguistic - necessary for understanding the text.
A commentary by a scholar might be on a single biblical book, e.g., the Gospel of Mark or the book of Judges; or a single-volume commentary might include commentaries on every book in the Bible, e.g. The New Jerome Biblical Commentary, or The Women's Bible Commentary; and there are multi-volume commentary series that go into greater depth on each biblical book.
Study Bible
an edition which prints not only the biblical text itself but also extensive explanatory material that facilitate the reader's study of the Bible: introductions, footnotes, cross-references, appendices with maps, chronologies, charts, etc.; often the words "study" or "annotated" appear in the title of such an edition, e.g., The Catholic Study Bible.
Lexicon
a dictionary that explains the meaning of ancient Hebrew or Greek words and provides references for where and how the words are used in ancient literature
