The Sacraments as efficacious signs

The sacraments cause something to happen; they bring about something that was not present before. They are sources of grace that bring about what they signify. They are efficacious because in them Christ himself is at work: it is he who acts in the sacraments in order to communicate the grace that each sacrament signifies.

Christ as the sacramental minister

Through the eyes of faith, we are called to see the reality of Christ in the sacraments and to realize that it is he who transforms us. He is the initiator of all that is good for our sake. It is up to us to respond to his grace. We cannot change ourselves without God's help. God calls us, gives us his grace, and transforms us. We are changed precisely because of the fact that we have received his grace in the sacraments.

Actual grace

Supernatural, free, and undeserved help from God that is given for specific circumstances to help us choose what is good and avoid what is evil

Sanctifying grace

The free and unmerited favor of God given through the sacraments

Grace and the Sacrament of Reconciliation

Through a worthy reception for the Sacrament of Reconciliation, sanctifying grace and our relationship with God can be restored. The Church recommends frequent Confession as a means of obtaining grace to avoid future sins and to keep smaller sins from growing into more serious ones.

The Sacraments call us to holiness

They are encounters with Christ, and they enable us to be more united to God and to be Christ to others. By the action of Christ, each sacrament gives a particular grace of the Holy Spirit that enables a person to cooperate with the plan of God.
