Generalist Practice

The application of an eclectic knowledge base, professional values, and a wide range of skills to target individual, family, group, organizational, or community systems for change within the context of five primary processes.

Supervision

The process by which a designated supervisor watches over a worker's performance, directs activities, and provides feedback.

Organizational Structure

Formal and informal manner in which tasks and responsibilities, lines of authority, channels of communication, and dimensions of power are established and coordinated within an organization.

Consultation

The act of seeking help from someone with expertise in a subject to devise a plan or solve a problem.

Critical Thinking

1. The careful scrutiny of what is stated as true or what appears to be true and the resulting expression of an opinion or conclusion based on that scrutiny.


2. The creative formulation of an opinion or conclusion when presented with a question, problem, or issue.

Planned Change

Involves the development and implementation of a strategy for improving or altering "some specified condition, pattern of behavior, or set of circumstances in an effort or well-being."

Problem Solving

Finding a solution to some difficulty or the answer to some question.

Engagement

The initial period when practitioners orient themselves to the problem at hand and being to establish communication and a relationship with others also addressing the problem.

Nonverbal Communication

Body language and sounds that convey information about how a person feels without saying so in words.

Assessment

A process occurring between practitioner and client, in which information is gathered, analyzed, and sythesized to provide a concise picture of the client and his or her needs and strengths.

Planning

Specifies what should be done


Work with the client to create treatment plan.


Prioritize problems with client.


Identify client's strengths to lead to planned change process.


Identify alternative interventions.


All courses of action should be evidence-based.


Help client evaluate pros and cons of each action in the plan.


Develop goals with client.


Establish contract with the client.

Implementation

The process whereby client and worker follow their plan to achieve their goals.

Evaluation

The process of determining the extent to which a given intervention was effective in achieving its goals.

Client System

Any individual, family, group, organization, or community that will ultimately benefit from generalist social work intervention.

Macro Client System

Involves larger numbers of clients, families, or groups of clients with similar characteristics or qualifications fro receiving resources or services, or an agency or community that will be the beneficiary of the macro intervention process.

Termination

The end of the professional social worker-client relationship.
