Agamemnon
King and leader of Greek forces, King of Mycenae, killed by his wife and her lover when he returned from the war.
Alcinous
King of Phaeacians. Father of Naussicaa and husband of Arête. He helps Odysseus back to Ithica by providing him with a ship, crew, clothes, and gifts. Odysseus is telling him his story.
Anticleia
Odysseus’s mother and wife of Laertes. Kills herself because she can’t take life without Odysseus any longer. She sees him in the underworld.
Antinoos
leader among the suitors, the worst one, first one killed
Elpenor
youngest crewmember. Dies when he falls of Circe’s roof and breaks his neck. He sees Odysseus in Hades and asks him to go back and give him a proper burial.
Eumaeus
loyal swineherd and friend of Odysseus. Helps fight for revenge with Odysseus.
Eurycleia
loyal servant who raised Telemachos and Odysseus. Often referred to as the old nurse. She finds our Odysseus’s true identity when washing his feet. She is the first one to do so.
Eurymachos
2nd most important suitor. Tires to bargain with Odysseus so he won’t kill him. He is cowardly but just as evil as Anitnoos.
Eurylochos
member of Odysseus’s crew, escaped from Circe. Goes and warns Odysseus. He also convinces the crew to kill and eat Helios’s cattle.
Helen
in love with Paris. Went with him to Troy. Started Trojan War. Wife of Menelaus.
Laertes
Odysseus’s father. Kills Eupeithes
Melanthius
goatherd who supports the suitors. Gets them weapons. They tie him to the top of a tower and then cut off his limbs.
Mentor (Mentes)
old friend of Odysseus. Athena always took the form of him. He was seen at: town council, fighting in the hall, at the end at Laertes’s house, and telling Telemachos to go to Pylos.
Naussicaa
beautiful daughter of King Alcinous and Queen Arête of the Phaeacians. Odysseus wakes up and finds her and her maids playing ball. She brings him back to the city.
Nestor
King of Pylos (place Telemachos was advised to sail to). Hw went to Tory and told Telemachos his father was dead.
Phemios Terpiades (the minstrel)
musician who has to play for the suitor. Was spared by Odysseus
Odysseus
King of Ithica, son of Laertes, husband of Penelope, father of Telemachos, on a 20-year journey back to Ithica. “Man never at a loss”
Orpheus
Famous musician. Son of Calliope (muse of epic poetry)
Paris
Trojan prince who is in love with Helen. Son of Priam (King of Troy)
Penelope
Odysseus’s wife, Telemachos’ mother. Suitors are after her and want to marry her. She leads them on but wont pick one. “Faithful Penelope”

blind prophet who advised Odysseus where to go and what to do. Lives in Hades. Circe tells Odysseus to go see him.

son of Penelope and Odysseus. Helps his dad fight. Is like his father.

sea monster of gray rock. Has 6 heads and eats one person for every head
