Duffle Coat
A warm woolen coat of fingertip length with hood attached, having frogs of wood and rope. It came into use on the ski lift after WWII when surplus English Navy coats were made available to civilians. Worn by men and women and children, they are frequently of Tyrolean cloth with wooden toggles and hemp hoops.
Parka, Anorak, Amount
A hip length hooded garment of sealskin worn by Eskimos. The name comes from the Aleutian Islands. The modern parka used in Europe and the U.S. developed in Scandinavia. It was made of lightweight cotton or silk, was very wind resistant and water repellant, and had allowance for ventilation when used for sports such as skiing or sailing.
Sack Dress
A straight Dress with no shape, cut from shoulder to hem like a bag or a sack.
Tent Dress
First launched in 1951 by Balenciaga in a wonderfully simple, black, woolen coat flaring widely from a low standing collar. It was followed in the early 1960’s by Yves St. Laurent’s A-line silhouette.
Trapeze Line
In 1958 Yves St. Laurent, the protégé and successor of Christian Dior, was acclaimed for his trapeze line which later evolved into the A-line.
Wedgie
A hose having a very thick sole and a wedge shaped heel.
