Synapse

Connection between two neurones

How is nerve signal transferred?

By chemicals which diffuse across the gap.

What do those diffused chemicals then do?

They set off new electrical signal in the next neurone

The transmission of a nervous impulse is very fast but it is slowed down a bit at the synapse. Why is this?

Diffusion across the synapse takes time

What do reflexes help prevent or reduce?

It prevents Injury

How do they reduce or prevent injury?

Reflexes are automatic, rapid responses to stimuli

What is the reflex arc?

The passage of information in a reflex from (receptor to effector)

What do the neurons in the reflex arc go through

-Spinal chord

-Or through an unconscious part of the brain

What happens when a stimulus is detected by a receptor?

Impulses are sent along a sensory neurone to the CNS

What happens when the impulses reach a synapse between the sensory neurons and a

Relay neurone?

They trigger chemicals to be released. These chemicals cause impulses to be sent along the relay neurone

What happens when the impulses reach between the relay neurone and motor neurone?

Chemicals are released and cause impulses to he went along the motor neurone

The impulses travel along the motor neurone to where?

Effector (muscle or gland)

The muscle then..

Contracts

Behaviour (waving) take similar pathway to reflexes

It goes through conscious part of brain instead of unconscious
