result of injury

vascular stroke

stroke in the vessels

Spina Bifida

congenital neural tube defect resulting in defects in the lumbar spinal column caused by imperfect union of vertebral parts. spinus processes tend to be missing.

Hydrocephalus

Congential, abnormal accumulation of fluid in the brain (CSF). Can occur in adults as a result of tumors and infections

Myelomeningocele

herniation of the meninges outside of the spinal column. looks like a bubble on the back of a child.

Alzheimer's Disease

A degenerative progressive brain disease that results in impairment of language function, inability to calculate, and deterioration of judgement. Brain cells are killed. Problems with memory, thinking, and behavior.

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease)

A degenerative disease where nerve cells that control the movement of your muscles die and your muscles weaken and waste away. Eventually affects chewing, swallowing, speaking and breathing. never diagnosed on first encounter bc it resembles other conditions

Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

A degenerative disease where the body's immune system eats away at the protective myelin sheath that covers your nerves. Resulting in severe pain, sensitivity, and deterioration of nerves themselves. Also a disease of exclusion.

Bell's Palsy

Degeneration of facial nerve VII that causes facial muscles to weaken and droop on one side. One sided smile, looks like a stroke, usually temporary.

Herpes Zoster (Shingles)

Infectious disease caused by the varicella zoster virus. (also causes chickenpox) Painful rash occurs on only one side of body that never crosses the mid-line.

Meningitis

Infectious inflammation of the membranes surrounding your brain and spinal cord. Highly contagious even through respiratory droplets. "hallmark" signs are headache, stiff neck, and fever. Can be fatal.

Cerebral Concussion

Trauma to the head that causes temporary brain dysfunction after injury.

Cerebral Contusion

TBI (traumatic brain injury) that causes bruising of the brain tissue. Hematomas can occur. Wide range of results

coma

a state of profound unconsciousness

Epilepsy

a disorder of the CNS that is characterized by seizure activity and alterations of consciousness

Thrombotic stroke

blood clot in artery leading to the brain results in occlusion of the vessel

Embolic stroke

dislodged thrombus travels to cerebral ateries and blocks small blood vessels

emboli

a piece of thrombus that broke off

Hemorrhagic stroke

blood vessels break and bleeding occurs

Cerebral embolisms and cerebral thrombosis cause

ischemic strokes

Cerebrospinal Fluid Analysis

CSF should be clear. this test measures pressure, total protein, glucose, cell count and is performed by a lumbar puncture.

Cerebral Angiography

X-ray imaging of the arterial blood system in the brain after injection of contrast material

Computed Tomography (CT)

X-ray technique that generates comupterized cross-sectional images of the brain and spinal cord. (or anywhere in the body) (CAT=CT)

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

Magnetic and radio waves to create an image

Positron Emission Tomography (PET)

Uses radioactive glucose to image metabolic activity of cells.

Doppler Ultrasound

records sound waves reflecting off moving objects, such as blood, to measure their speed and how they flow.

Electroencephalography (EEG)

records electrical activity in the brain.

craniectomy

excision (removal) of part of the cranium to access the brain

craniotomy

incision into the skull to access the brain

neuroplasty

surgical repair of the nerves

laminectomy

excision of the thin plate of the vertebra to relieve pressure on the spinal cord.

analgesic

drug that relieves pain

anesthetic

compound that provides temporary loss of sensation

antianxiety agent, anxiolytic

category of drugs used to treat anxiety without causing excessive sedation.

anticonvulsant

drug that prevents or arrests seizures

antidepressant

drug used to treat depression

drug that reduces inflammation

epidural injection

subcutaneous or intramuscular injection of an analgesic into the epidural space

class of psychotropic drugs used to treat psychosis, particularly schizophenia

psychotropic

drug used to treat mental illness

sedative

drug that quiets nervous excitement

electroencephalography technician

a person who is trained to set up and preform electroencephalograms

neurology

medical specialty concerned with the study ans treatment of conditions involving the nervous system

neurologist

physician who specializes in neurology
