The story of Joseph Smith
Had a vision of the angel Moroni who told him to go and find gold plates in the mountains and instructed him to keep them hidden . He spent 4 years sectretly translating the plates and got 11 Witnesses to varify. The book of Mormon was published.
Kirtland, Ohio 1831
Everything went well to start except occasional violence. 1833 - built first temple and bank. Numbers grew. Non - Mormons became uneasy and bank collapsed in 1837 in financial crisis. The Mormons were drivenout by non-Mormons.
Missouri
Unwelcome from the start because of religious differences and communal land sharing. They were from the North so disagreed with slavery. Violence broke out especially about Danites. Brigham Young led them away when leaders were imprisoned.
Nauvoo, Illinois 1839
Began building around existing village determined to stay. Smith got a charter from the state gov. to have their own laws and army. 2 political parties wanted thier support but non-Mormons got uneasy again. Smith+brother imprisoned and shot by mob.
Brigham Young - Plans
Young kept the dream alive taking leadership of 15000 Mormons. Smith had negotiated land outside USA to the west between Rockies and Sierra Nevada before his death. This would become Salt Lake City.
Brigham Yound - Preparation
Young had to organise 15,000 men over 2,250km. Every household built wagons to prepare. Anti Mormon hostility broke out in 1846 meaning they left early. Planned to make camp on Missouri banks to plant crops to sustain them through the winter.
Salt Lake City
Young split the families into groups of 100, 50 then 10 with a captain for the 10 for the journey across the Plains. Their long wagon tral struggled over the plains and through the rockies and arrived at the great Salt lake (seemed uninhabitable)
Factors that helped Young turn the 'inhabitable' land into a city
1. Organisation, discipline and determination in getting there
2. Leadership when they arrived - self sufficiency
3. Perpetual Emigration fund for other countries to raise population
How did Yound make money?
Following Gold rush - organised places for travellers to re-stock and repair and charged tolls to cross Mormon territory
Rilway was built - negotiated for railroad to pass near the city to encourage trade.
Young and the government - becoming a territory
1848: Salt Lake Valley was included in the land handed over to USA by Mexico meaning Yound had to apply to be admitted to USA. Became a territory (Utah), not independant, USA law.
Young and the government - keeping their own laws
