  • Back

Right Lymphatic Duct

Drains right arm, torso and head

(right subclavian vein)

Thoracic duct

Drains other 3/4 of the body

(left subclavian vein)

Primary Lymphatic Organs

Organs involved in the formation & maturation of lymphocytes

(Thymus: t-cells, red bone marrow: b-cells)

Secondary Lymphatic Organs

Organs involved in housing lymphocytes

(Tonsils, Lymph nodes, Spleen, MALT)

Immunocompetence

The ability to recognize and respond to antigens

Lymphatic capillaries

anchored w/ anchoring filament

have 1-way valves

large diameter

easier to pass through

Lacteals

absorbs fat in small intestine

fluid called "chyle" - milky, full of fat

Functions of the Lymphatic system

Defense

Fluid balance (3L back into blood)

Fat absorption (digestive system)

What affects lymph movement

- skeletal muscle contraction

- thoracic pump (respiratory)

- pulsatile movement of capillaries/arteries

- smooth muscle contraction (larger lymph vessels)

Structure of Lymph node

1. cortex: contain lymph nodules: a germinal center (b-cells & macrophages) & a mantle zone (t-cells & macrophages)

2. medulla: medullary cords: CT that supports b-cells, t-cells and macrophages

Locations of tonsils

Pharyngeal: aka adenoids

Palatine: back of throat

Lingual: base of tongue

Parts of the spleen

White pulp: T-cells, b-cells, macrophage

Red pulp: RBC, platelets, macrophages, b-cells (serves as a blood reservoir)

MALT

Mucosa Associated Lymphatic Tissue

- Larger groups of lymphatic nodules found w/in respiratory and digestive tract mucous

Peyers Patch

MALT found in the small intestine
