class 7N

Write and deliver a 3 minute speech.

Due Term 3 Week 10
11111111111111111111111111111111111

Good morning Mrs Clifford and students.

My speech is about "The Great Escape" by

AMERICAN film producer JOHN STURGES.

It is an ACTION film set in WW2 in a

GERMAN PRISONER - OF -WAR CAMP.

It is based on a true story.
22222222222222222222222222222222222222

The ALLIED SOLDIERS

(Britain, America and Australia) have been

CAPTURED by the enemy

and are being HELD PRISONER in

a HIGH SECURITY camp in Germany.
33333333333333333333333333333333333

The THEME of the film is HEROES.

The film shows the ALLIED SOLDIERS as

STRONG

HEROIC men

who will NEVER GIVE UP !

In my speech I will talk about 3 FILM TECHNIQUES

that are used to HELP THE AUDIENCE

UNDERSTAND the film's MESSAGE.

The techniques are

1. CHARACTERISATION

2. MUSIC, and

3. SETTING.
555555555555555555555555555555555

Firstly, CHARACTERISATION. ..................

In "The Great Escape" characterisation helps the

audience understand the HERO message by making

the ALLIES seem STRONG, HEROIC, KIND and CLEVER,

while the ENEMY GUARDS seem either

INTIMIDATING or WEAK.
66666666666666666666666666666666666

I will give you some examples of this sort of characterisation.

Firstly, Captain HILTS - the Cooler King. .................

Hilts is very tough, brave, and clever. ..............
He has made many escape attempts. He never gives up!

He is willing to help the other prisoners too, even if it means he has to go back to the cooler for another 20 days!

...............
7777777777777777777777777777777777777

Another strong character is

Squadron Leader HENDLEY - the Scrounger.

Hendley is an American pilot, like Hilts. .............
He is very smart and can trick the enemy guards into giving him things he needs. ...............

Hendley is kind and caring too. His room mate, Colin -the Forger, ...... goes blind, ...... so Hendley risks his own life to help Colin escape.
8888888888888888

On the other hand,..... the ENEMY GUARDS are either

WEAK, .... like VERNON, .... or

BULLIES, like the GESTAPO Officers.

Vernon is a German soldier who didn't want to go to war - he was a Boy Scout.
When the war started the Germans forced the scouts to become Hitler Youth fighters.
Vernon tries to do what his leaders tell him because he is scared of them.
99999999999999999999999999

The GESTAPO Officers and the SS are the BULLIES.

These German Officers hand over the prisoners at the start of the movie.

They are very INTIMIDATING ....to the German Captain.

They WARN HIM if there are any escapes he will be sent

to DIE ON THE RUSSIAN FRONT!
11.11.11.11.11.11.11.11.11.

The CHARACTERISATION makes

the ALLIES seem like HEROES

fighting against a cruel enemy.
1212121212121212

The next technique I will talk about is the MUSIC. ..............

Like the CHARACTERISATION, the MUSIC also helps the

audience understand the theme of the film.

Happy marching music is played whenever there
is a hopeful or happy scene, ............... and

dramatic, scary music is played just before something
bad happens to the Allies.
131313131313131313131

The music tells the audience whether to feel

relaxed and hopeful OR

tense and worried.

A good example of the music GUIDING OUR EMOTIONS is at the start of the film.

Even though the scene shows a convoy of army trucks transporting the prisoners to be locked up till the end of the war,

THE MUSIC tells us NOT TO WORRY ..... because
THESE MEN are HEROES!
141414141414141

Finally, I will explain how THE SETTING helps the audience believe the film's message. ................

The film is set in a German prisoner- of - war camp during WW2.

The time and place help the audience believe the HERO message because the SETTING makes the story seem factual - a true life story that was exactly like the film !

Some examples that suggest the setting are the old cars that transport the German Officers, and the old telephones they use.

CONCLUSION OF THE SPEECH

In "The Great Escape" the characterisation, music and setting are used together to persuade the audience to agree with the producer's point of view.

The American producer John Sturges believed the
Allied soldiers who planned this amazing escape were heroes,

........ and his movie helps us see how

........HE IMAGINED THEM.

Thank you for listening. :)
