what are the elements of design?

space, line, shape, form, texture, color

what are the principles of design?

balance, rhythm, emphasis, unity and proportion/scale

what is the principle of repetition?

- design is copied or repeated

- a pattern carried throughout the design

how does texture affect color?

smooth surfaces reflects more light than rough surfaces ( making them brighter and lighter)

rough surfaces absorb more light ( making them look darker and less intense)

what do curved lines suggest?

if you put too many curved lines it will make the design busy

what is the difference between horizontal, vertical, and radial balance?
horizontal: leads the eyes left to right

vertical: leads the eyes up radical: is curved

what do diagonal lines suggest?

action, movement, and excitement

what is space?

the area provided for a particular purpose

what are four types of rhythm?

Gradation, Repetition, Radiation, Continuous line

what is asymmetrical balance? Example?

parts of the design are not identical but are equal in visual weight. ex: butterfly

what is the difference between horizontal and vertical lines?

horizontal: leads the eyes from left to right

vertical: leads the eyes up

what is the golden mean?

PHI (fee)

what is the difference between shape and form?

form is 3 dimensions and shape is a flat or silhouette image.

what are five types of balances?

vertical, horizontal, radical, asymmetrical, symmetrical.

what does unity or harmony balance mean?

all the elements and principles of design are working together to create harmony

what are the two things texture involves?

how the surface feels to the touch and how it appears to feel

what are the four types of line?

vertical, horizontal, diagonal, curve,

what is proportion?

how the design is visually divided

which of the five types of balance suggests excitement or interest?

rhythm, emphasis, unity, proportion, scale

what is symmetrical balance? Example?

when both parts are identical

what is emphasis? What is another name for it?

how one object or item stands out. another name is unity

what happens when you see a continuous line?

gives the design movement

what is another name for symmetrical balance?

formal

what is another name for asymmetrical balance?

informal

what is the difference between gradation and radiation?

gradation is one element of design changes and radiation is lines or designs radiate or move out from a central point.
