Revelation.

What does scripture say about revelation?

It's rather silent. Scripture isn't a manual.

Etymology of Revelation?


Latin. Revelare.

Concepts behind Revelation?

Something hidden made clear. Something in the dark brought to light. Revelation isnt done by you; it's done for you.

Revelation is a divine act?

Yes. Not done by you. What is the human corrolation? Faith or unbelief. In the face of revelation there is either faith or unbelief.

Kinds of Revelation?

General and Special

Discuss the different kinds of knowing.

Every other language has different words for knowing people versus knowing facts. English doesnt. So what does it mean to know god?

What's Natural Theology?

Theology based on general revelation.

What's general revelation?

Knowledge of God coming from a person. Not from scripture. On the basis of nature. It's universal. Everyone experiences it. What the world tells you is general revelation

Where did this idea come from?

The New Testament. Pslams 19 "The heavens declare the glory of god!" Acts 17 The people knew there was a God. Romans 1. Paul hasnt been to rome yet. he's write to people he doesn't know. He says you dont/cant prove yourself righteous, and you dont need to. You just need the nuclear idea of faith. We try to suppress the fact that we know there is a god. Creation gives evidence to the creator.

What's special revelation?

Knowledge of God that has been particular disclosure by god. Only to those who see and hear with the eyes and ears of God.

What's the word of God?

Christ! Also the sermon. The word of God isGod made flesh. both god and man. The word of God is the bible.

What's scriputre?

Sacred writing. Latin=scriptura. writing. Scripture is writing given special authority by a community.

What is difference between Islam's scared text and ours?

Word of God became text, we say word of god became flesh.

Scripture as glasses?

Scripture points away from itself. it's an object that through which one looks. no one buys glasses to put on display to look at. you look through them!

Most common over arching kind of writing in the Bible?

Narrative. Begins with creation, and contures with the fall. there is a promis of redemption (the cross). Eventually, there is a promise of recreation. The bible tells of the story of the cosmos. To tspeak to a kid, you gotta tak at their level. God talks at our level through story.

What's the point of the biblical story?

To tell you who god is. Theocentricity.

The Bible is holy? what?

The church sys the bible is holy. holy means set apart. special. different.

Bible's canonicity?

the bible is the canon (measuring stick). The bible has 66 books, and we arent adding more.

Bible's authority?

The bible has authority. Int eh olden days, you needed the church to get to god. Martin luther says the bible is the way to god.

Bible and inspiration?

The bible is inspired. This is said in the bible itself. Theopneustos=God breathed.

Kinds of inspiration (in regards to the bible)

Mechainical. God spoke or acted and humans wrote it down.


Poetic. Humans were inspired like how Motzart was.


Organic. God spoke and actions, and the word of God develops and grows over Time. Organic is the middle ground.

Bible and infallibility.

Infallible means the bible will not trick you. it can be trusted. Inerrency means without error.


If it's infallible, that means it wont trick you in regards to its purpose. If it is inerrent, that menas it wont trick you in any regard. some people arent believers in inerrency. this is because it is difficult to defend.

Examples of why the bible might not be inerrent.

It has been rewritten a lot of Times.


In 1 Kings, they describe the size of a barrel, but the use 3 as pi instead of 3.1415926...

The bible is sufficient?

It tells you all you need to know to have a saving relationshp with God.

Bible and perspicacity?

Perspicacity means insight. It is clear who god is. not everything is clear, but the important stuff is.

Bible and necessity?

If you want to know who the one true god is, you need the bible. the knowledge of god.

What's hermeneutics?

The study or science of interpritation.

Levels of hermeneutics?

1. We interpret everything all the Time.


2. Academic level. whow to interperate texts.


3. theological level. how do you interpret biblical texts?

Advice about hermeneutics?

1 The historical principle of interpretation= you always need to bare in mind the 2 audiences. then and now.


2. The literary principle= Many different types of writing in the bible. which am i reading?


3. Theological principle= You try tointerperate parts in light of other parts. New is wrtten with the background of the Old

Why was the Belgic confession written?

To explain their faith. the lutheran faith.

What's in the Belgic Confession?

article 1. we believe in god.


Article 2. general revelation and special revelation.


Article 3 and following. we love scripture.

4. prodestents changed the old testament back to what it was before the catholics added books


6. Prodestents call this books Apocrypha.


7. authority

Stances on needing both types of revelation?

Diesm says you dont need special revelation.


Karl Barth says you dont need general revelation.


Others say we need both.

Philosophers and hermeneutics?

Descartes doubted everything.


Marx. He sees a war between the haves and the haves nots. He wants to do this by getting rid of Christianity.


Freud. He would look at us and see each one of us as messes. broading volcanos of sexual passion.


Both Marx and Freud look beneath the surface. they doubt.

Christianity and hermeneutics?

Scripture is trustworthy. we dont need to doubt everything. that is the world telling us that.
