What makes up the Oral Cavity

The oral cavity is made up of;


- cheeks, hard and soft palate, tongue, teeth and the salivary glands

What is the function/purpose of the Oral Cavity.


In particular the Salivary Glands.

The teeth, masticate (chew) the food into smaller pieces so that enzymes and acids can break it down easily. Assist the rest of the digestive system in breaking it down. The tongue then moves the food toward the esophagus. The Salivary Glands which are located under the tongue release Amylase.



What is amylase, where is it found, what is its function?

Amylase is an enzyme which is excreted from the Salivary Glands which are located under the tongue. Amylase breaks down starch into maltose.
