- they believed whoever had the most powerful weapon was the superpower
The Berlin Crisis
1949-61
-the Brain Drain- all highly educated and wealthy people wanted to flee to west Berlin
-2.7 million east Germans fled to west Berlin for: a better way of life, to reunite with their families
-The people who were leaving were the most skilled people so east Berlin was becoming less efficient
-The SU looked weak because they couldn't maintain peace in their own land
Khrushchev's Ultimatum
1958
-Refugee crisis was a problem for Khrushchev. Proofed that capitalism was more popular.
- November 1958, Khrushchev declared the whole of Berlin belonged to East Germany so the SU.
-US troops had 6months to withdraw or they would be at war

The Berlin Wall
1961
-Kennedy would not withdraw troops
-Khrushchev built a barbed wire fence later made to concrete. No access apart from chackpoint Charlie
-Brought international relief. Wall is better then war
-Important symbol for Cold War. a physical symbol showing there was a divide between east and west. War was nowhere near ending
The Cuban Revolution
-Castro (communist) takes over Cuba and annoys them
-The Cuban people revoulted
The Bay of Pigs
-CIA funded, trained, armed and transported 1,300 Cuban exiles to invade Cuba
-The invasion was a disaster and Kennedy was humiliated
-Castro asked Khrushchev for help. Castro was vulnerable and feared another American attack
