Thurgood Marshall
Charles Hamilton Houston placed Thurgood Marshall as the leader of a team of his best students in law. Over the next 23 years Marshall and his NAACP lawyers would win 29 out of 32 cases.
Brown V. Board of Education
This was Thurgood Marshall's most stunning victory. In this case 8 year old Linda Brown had charged the Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas, with violation Linda's rights by denying er rights to an all white elementary school 2 blocks away from her home. The nearest all-black school was 21 blocks away.
Rosa Parks
Was a seamstress of the NAACP officer, she took a seat on the front row of the blacks section of the bus, as the bus filled up the bus driver ordered Rosa to leave her seat so that a white man could sit down and not sit next to any of the "blacks" Rosa refused. She was arrested. Her arrest sparked interest and people began to boycott buses and a huge movement came from Rosa.
MLK
To Lead the group in the Protest came Martin Luther King Jr. a 26 year old Baptist church. He had a Ph.D. degree in theology from Boson University
Southern Christian Leadership Conference
It's purpose was "to carry on nonviolent crusades against the evils of second-class citizenship" African Churches were the base of the protests and urged it's attendants to join the SCLC.
Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC)
Ella Baker helped students at Shaw University and African American University in Raleigh, North Carolina to organize a national protest group. These students risked a great deal- losing scholarships, being expelled from college, being physically harmed- they were determined to change the system.
Freedom Riders
Core members and white civil rights activists joined the members on a historic bus trip across the south. The two-bus trip would test the supreme court decisions in banning bus routes and segregated facilities in bus terminals. The freedom riders endured a lot of beatings from racists, and mobs of bigots. The freedom writers did get what they wanted, the freedom writers got direct support 400 U.S marshals protected the riders. In addition, the attorney general and the Interstate Commerce Commission banned segregation in all interstate travel, facilities, including waiting rooms, restrooms and lunch counters.
Civil Rights Act 1964
This prohibited discrimination because of race, religion, national origin and gender. It gave all citizens the right to enter liberties, parks, washrooms, restaurants, theaters, and other public accommodations.
De Facto segregation
This is what African Americans in the North faced, segregation that exists by practice and custom.
