Fathers have PR if married to mother at birth




There are ways in which non-married fathers or step fathers can gain PR




Both parents who are PR have to agree if change of name or child to be out of country for > 1mo

Confidentiality, non-maleficence of making unnecessary allegations against parents

Beneficence to the child - the well-being of the child is the doctor's primary concern

The Children Act 1989

- interests of the child are paramount


- act immediately if suspicious of abuse


- document meticulously


- if urgent - contact police/NSPCC/social services who will carry out a statutory assessment (1 day)


- if non-urgent - protection lead, CAF/TAC


- obtain consent if safe to do so

What are the possible results of a statutory assessment?

- removal of child from home either via an emergency protection order or via the police if no time for EPO


- involvement of social services and CAF


- CAF is a MDT meeting discussing the needs of the child and the potential ways forward
