The Role of the indie Producer is to find and option source material, develop and package the project, secure financing, oversee production and post, and sell and assist in marking of the picture.

How do you find the status of the rights to a book?

What is a screenplay option?
contractual agreement between a potential film producer and a writer who holds the ownership of the script.
What does a screenplay option entail?
The agreement details the exclusive rights, including the specified time period and financial obligations, the producer has to advance the essential elements, such as financing and/or talent, towards the creation of a film based on the screenplay.

What is the purchase price?
1.5-3% of the proposed budget for a screenplay. Usually 2.5 for a book.
What is contingent compensation?
"backend" - share in the film profits with the writer/talent. Generally 5% of the producer's net profits.
What is a studio turnaround?
The studio has abandoned the project and the producers have about a year to set up at another studio/financing source. New studio has to pay back the development costs plus interest to the original studio and then the producers can make the film.
