AFFINITY
Chemical attraction as in dyes for yarns.
BARRE
An unintentional, repetitive pattern of continuous bars and stripes.
BLEED
Loss of dye (color) from the fabric during a wet treatment finishing process or through washing.
CALENDERING
A finishing process that creates a sheen on a fabric by passing it between two stainless steel or wooden rollers under regulated pressure. Sometimes the rollers are heated to a specific temperature to achieve a particular effect.
CHINTZ
A plain –woven printed or solid cotton, or cotton blend, that may be finished with sheen applied by chemicals or by calendaring.
CHROMA
The relative intensity or brightness of a color, as in bright green or dull red.
COLORFASTENESS
The resistance of yarns or fabric to change in color characteristics or transfer color to another fabric.
CONVERTER
An individual or company that finishes greige goods.
CROCKING
Transferring dye from the surface of a dyed or printed fabric onto another surface by rubbing.
DESIZING
A process of converting greige (NATURAL) goods by adding that are later washed away and change the shape of the yarn or fabric to better accept dyes.
DIRECT
Dyes applied directly onto cellulose fibers in a neutral or alkaline bath without prior treatment. These dyes are known to bleed and dull in color when washed; a class of dyes.
DRY PRINTING
Prints that have been set with heat or other means without the use of liquid.
DYE ASSISTANTS
Substances that enhance the ability of dye molecules to penetrate yarn.
FINISHING
Usually a sequence of fabric treatments, excluding dye, that enhances greige goods for sale.
FLAME RESISTANT
A fabric that burns but is self-extinguishing with or without the removal of the ignition source.
FULLING
A finishing process for woolens that compresses fibers, producing felt.
HUE
Name for a particular color such as yellow or red.
HYDROPHOBIC
Lacking an affinity for water or repelling water, like polyester.
IKAT
A complex artistic technique used to create images on fabric. The images are dyes onto the threads before they are placed on the loom and woven into the finished product. The work ikat derives from the Malay word mengikat, meaning “to tie.”
LAMBREQUIN
A stiffly shaped overhead window surround covered in fabric. Unlike a cornice, a lambrequin continues down the spectral distribution of light energy.
MERCERIZING
A chemical treatment of cotton yarn or fabric by immersion in a strong alkali bath. Results are best with combed cotton.
METAMERISM
A color that looks different under various light sources.
MUNSELL
A color system established by Albert Munsell (1858-1918) using a three-dimensional color tree. It is often used to describe paint colors and frequently used in teaching color.
NANOTECHNOLOGY
The study and manipulation of atomic structures.
PANTONE
A color identifying and color forecasting system used in interior and fabric design, architecture, and industrial design fields. Small, numbered paper samples are used to help identify specific colors.
PIECE DYEING
Dyeing of fabric rather than dyeing yarns.
PIGMENT
Finely ground powder colorants that become dispersed in the dyeing process and remain on the surface of yarns of fabric.
PRINTED FABRIC
Designs applied to fabric using color.
REGISTRATION
Alignment of pattern and/or color.
SHRINK CONTROL
Methods for controlling the reduction in length or width of fabric.
SINGEING
A finishing process for burning off protruding fibers from yarns or fabric.
SKEIN DYEING
A finishing process for burning off protruding fibers from yarns or fabric.
SOLUTION DYEING
Dyeing manufactured filaments before the material is extruded.
STENCIL
A printing technique where a design is cut into cardboard, metal, or another material and then applied to a piece of fabric or paper.
STOCK DYEING
The process of dyeing fibers or filament after they are cleaned or foreign matter and become transformed into yarn.
STRIKE-OFF
A short test run of a fabric to determine its feasibility.
